Being arrested on drug charges can have long-term implications for the person who was arrested.
Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Arash Hashemi said he’s seen the damage even a single charge can do to a person’s reputation, job and life in general.
Many employers do background checks, looking at potential employees from several angles. A criminal charge of any kind is often enough to eliminate that person from consideration.
“Some employers may be willing to overlook a simple misdemeanor weed charge, but others may not. If you are charged with something more serious, that is going to have even more serious implications for you,” Mr. Hashemi said.
Fighting drug charges is necessary. Mr. Hashemi said a spirited defense, can get the charges dropped or the accused person declared not guilty in court. If the evidence is overwhelming, a good defense attorney can negotiate a deal with the prosecution, sometimes getting the original charges dropped in exchange for a plea agreement to a lesser charge.
“What it comes down to it drug charges can follow you for the rest of your life, affecting your ability to find work, borrow money and even travel,” he said. “If you are charged with a drug related offense, you need an attorney who knows the law and can fight for you.”
