This innovative Health Coaching Program is now offered by Southern California University of Health Sciences andbegins April 2018. Integrative practitioners will have the opportunity to learn Health Coaching through the new program, Health Coaching for Healthcare Professionals, at Southern California University of Health Sciences. Developed by professional health coach and integrative chiropractor Dr. Joel Kreisberg, DC, PCC of Teleosis Institute in Berkeley, CA, the program invites chiropractors, acupuncturists and naturopaths to join the growing trend in integrative medicine that incorporates health coaching skills into clinical practice.
Health Coaching is defined by Sforzo* as a “client- or patient-centered process that assumes a working relationship/partnership develops between patient and clinician to advance healthy lifestyle behavior change using tools such as nonjudgmental dialogue, goal setting, and accountability.” Rapidly growing in corporate wellness programs, hospitals and primary care clinics, Health Coaching is proving to be a clinically effective and cost-saving intervention that relies upon behavioral and lifestyle interventions.
“I’m really pleased with the buzz happening around the launch of this program,” shared Dr. Kreisberg. “With the emphasis on communication skills and relationship-centered care, recent research has established Health Coaching as a proven treatment modality for prevention and treatment of diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, heart disease, cancer, and other chronic disorders.* I see Chiropractors distinguishing themselves in the marketplace through their enhanced abilities to be more present, to listen more deeply and to better support positive change with their patients. Health Coaching offers this and much more.
With the launch of the new program in Health Coaching at Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU), and the approval of the program for continuing education credit for chiropractors, acupuncturists and naturopaths, integrative practitioners will for the first time be able to learn these innovative clinical skills as part of their ongoing educational requirements for professional licensure.
SCU has been in business for 100 years, initially as the Los Angeles Chiropractic College. In the last 15 years, SCU has expanded its academic programs to include traditional Chinese medicine, Physician Assistant, Ayurvedic Medicine, Yoga Therapy and Nutrition. With the new Health Coaching program, SCU continues its leadership in the emerging field of integrative health and medicine.
Dr. Kreisberg has been developing Health Coaching programs for clinicians at the Teleosis Institute, a non-for-profit organization devoted to Coaching and Narrative Healing. He brings 28 years as an integrative physician, 20 years of innovative program development in healthcare and six years as an Integral Master Coach™. Dr. Kreisberg firmly believes that “Bringing effective integrative therapies directly to individuals ready to engage transformative healing offers a powerful tool for reducing the impact of modern lifestyle challenges, increasing motivation for individuals supporting sustained health outcomes.”
