Australian Pet Treat Pioneer Huds and Toke Leads Sustainable Protein Revolution as Global Market Embraces Alternative Nutrition

Sunshine Coast company’s early adoption of insect protein positions them ahead of industry transformation

COOLUM, AUSTRALIA — As the global pet industry embraces alternative proteins, with lab-grown meat dog treats recently launching in UK retail, one Australian company has been pioneering sustainable pet nutrition for years. Huds and Toke, the Sunshine Coast-based pet treat manufacturer, has been using black soldier fly larvae protein in premium pet treats since well before alternative proteins became a global phenomenon.

With the alternative protein market projected to exceed $100 billion globally and growing interest in sustainable pet nutrition, Huds and Toke’s established expertise in insect-based protein positions the company as an authentic leader in the transformation of pet food.

“We’ve been working with insect protein for years, long before it became a trending topic,” said Emma Gibbons, co-founder and 2023 Queensland AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award winner. “Our approach has always been about finding genuinely sustainable protein sources that provide excellent nutrition for pets.”

The company’s pioneering approach has proven prescient as the industry shifts toward alternative proteins. Recent developments include lab-grown meat dog treats launching in UK retail at £3.49 (approximately AU$6.80) for 50 grams, highlighting the premium market emerging for alternative protein pet foods.

Proven Sustainability Approach

Huds and Toke operates from a solar-powered facility in Coolum, transforming surplus vegetables and Australian-farmed black soldier fly larvae into premium pet treats. This approach embodies circular economy principles increasingly valued by environmentally conscious pet owners.

“Black soldier fly larvae contain approximately 40% protein, 28% fat, 10% fibre, and 3% calcium,” explained Gibbons. “They’re highly nutritious and use significantly less water and land than traditional protein sources while helping reduce food waste.”

The company has built an international presence, with products available across Australia, the United States, UK, Ireland, Singapore, Germany, and Japan. Their notable partnership with Krispy Kreme sees Australian-made doggie doughnuts sold in US stores.

Innovation Recognition

Emma Gibbons’ leadership in sustainable pet nutrition was recognised with the 2023 Queensland AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award. The company has also received significant government support through Trade and Investment Queensland’s programs and Advance Queensland funding, reflecting official recognition of their innovative approach.

The business, which employs approximately 20 people locally, has built an entirely female team, challenging traditional industry norms while scaling from startup to international success.

Market Position

As the global pet food market continues expanding and consumers increasingly seek sustainable options, Huds and Toke’s established expertise in alternative proteins positions them well for continued growth. The company’s early adoption of insect protein technology provides a competitive advantage as the industry explores sustainable nutrition solutions.

About Huds and Toke

Founded in 2014 by Russell and Emma Gibbons, Huds and Toke creates premium pet treats for dogs, cats, horses, and other animals at their solar-powered manufacturing facility in Coolum, Queensland. The company has grown from a startup to an international business with products available across multiple countries, including a partnership with Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in the United States.

Critical Alerts Missed? Kannect Guarantees 100% Delivery for Nonprofits

0
As social media reach plummets, nonprofits lose lifesaving connections. Kannect’s unified platform ensures every update gets seen – because communities can’t afford silence.

When a Texas fire station posted wildfire evacuation alerts, social media buried them – dozens never got the message. This isn’t rare: nonprofits average less than 5% organic reach (Socialinsider, 2025) on platforms they rely on – and with social media trust collapsing (Statista, 2025), the cost of silence keeps rising.

Today, Kannect fixes that. We guarantee what Facebook and Twitter can’t: 100% delivery, zero algorithms– because in crises, ‘maybe’ isn’t good enough.

When Algorithms Fail

“No mission should be lost to an algorithm. Kannect gives every organization the power to reach its people instantly, every time,” said Kailah Romine, CEO and founder of Kannect. “We built Kannect so every mission – from disaster relief to neighborhood safety – can reach people instantly, without compromise.”

Right now, food banks are missing hungry families. Shelters can’t reach those in danger. Neighborhood watches lose critical safety updates. Why? Because social media chooses what people see – and nonprofits never make the cut.

The Kannect Difference: How We Beat Social Media at Its Own GameInstead of juggling social media platforms and 5+ tools like Eventbrite, WhatsApp, Mailchimp, Trello, and GoFundMe, organizations can now manage all their community engagement and member needs in one place.

  • One Tool, Zero Chaos – Replace 5+ apps with a single dashboard and manage members, events, fundraising, communications, content, tasks, and analytics, saving 5+ hours/week to focus on your mission, not tech headaches.
  • Always-On Communication – Bypass algorithms and reach 100% of members.
  • Mobile & Web Access – Reach people on any device, no app required.
  • Custom Branding – Launch fully branded iOS and Android apps for your community.

A 2023 Social Plus study found that in-app communities boost retention by 40%, engagement by 35%, and accelerate growth by 30%, making them powerfully effective. [2]

The result: faster communication, higher engagement, and reduced time spent switching between platforms.

Personalization is now a loyalty driver, according to Deloitte Digital 2023. 69% of individuals are more likely to interact with organizations that personalize their experience, and 68% report higher satisfaction when content is tailored to them. Kannect’s tailored messaging turns brief interactions into lasting loyalty. [3]

Empowering Impact, Bridging Digital Divides

Kannect advances UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities): Bridging the digital divide.
  • SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities): Empowering local leaders.
  • SDG 17 (Partnerships): Uniting organizations for collective impact.

By making tools free for organizations with under 1,000 members, Kannect ensures even the smallest nonprofits and community groups can access enterprise-level technology without budget barriers, helping strengthen local infrastructure, rebuild trust, and close the digital gap for underserved communities.

Trusted by Diverse Communities

As trust in mainstream platforms declines, direct communication tools like Kannect are becoming essential infrastructure for community safety and engagement.

Serving fire stations, support groups, HOAs, schools, and city councils, Kannect helps organizations across sectors. Hundreds more are joining each month as leaders seek better ways to stay organized and connected.

“Thank you, Kailah Romine, for being so forward-thinking and creating a platform that totally removes the barriers for nonprofits to have a digital presence through an app,” said Jamilah Robinson, CEO of Elevate Your Impact, and Executive Director of Missing Pieces Support Group.

After switching to Kannect, internal data shows organizations increased engagement by at least 32%within 30 days.

About Kannect

Founded in 2020 and trusted by over 1,000 mission-driven organizations, Kannect is the only distraction-free community engagement platform guaranteeing 100% message delivery. By replacing fragmented tools with one unified solution, Kannect empowers organizations to focus on impact rather than logistics.

A bootstrapped, fully remote team with no investors and no ads – just one rule: If it doesn’t serve communities first, we won’t build it.

Next quarter, Kannect will unveil AI-powered analytics that predict engagement trends and recommend outreach strategies. By 2028, Kannect aims to silence algorithms for good, connecting 500K organizations worldwide and ensuring no community goes unheard – rebuilding trust in digital communication.

Get Started

Every day you spend relying on social media to reach your community is another day your community misses critical updates. Only 47 spots remain forSeptember’s free onboarding reserve yours before nonprofits in crisis fill the list.

Break from alcohol program founder transforms personal loss into mission of hope and renewal amid rising alcohol dependency

0

Centennial, CO – Amid rising concerns about alcohol dependency affecting millions, Ross King, founder of the neuroscience-based transformative “Break from Alcohol” program, has channeled profound personal loss into a powerful mission of renewal and empowerment. After losing both elder brothers, Kevin King and Neil C. King, to cancer at the young age of 65 years old, Ross dedicated himself to supporting others struggling with alcohol addiction, crafting a structured path toward genuine self-discovery and lasting sobriety.

Recent CDC reports indicate that excessive alcohol use contributes to over 178,000 deaths annually in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). Ross candidly shares his own silent battle with alcohol dependency, which intensified over the years due to the pressures of entrepreneurship, fatherhood, and the ongoing pursuit of mental health and wellness.

A pivotal turning point occurred when Ross read his brother Kevin’s poignant poem, shared at Kevin’s memorial service, titled “Real Treasure”:

“It’s funny that pirates are dashing around searching for treasure, never realizing the real treasure is the fond memories they are creating.”

These profound words shifted Ross’s perspective, highlighting the urgency of embracing the present and living authentically. Driven by newfound clarity, Ross courageously adopted an alcohol-free lifestyle and pursued extensive training, earning professional certifications in Neuro-linguistic Programming and sobriety coaching. This commitment led to the creation of the comprehensive “Break from Alcohol” program, empowering numerous individuals to overcome dependency, reclaim their health, and rediscover their true selves.

The recent passing of Ross’s other brother, Neil C. King, a key contributor to the Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage by The Wall Street Journal on the September 11 attacks and acclaimed author of American Ramble: A Walk of Memory and Renewal, provided further inspiration. Ross cites a transformative quote from Neil’s book: “Do not let the world form you. Do not conform to it. Instead, transform yourself through a renewing of your mind.”

Recognizing profound parallels between Neil’s journey of renewal and his own, Ross developed the innovative True Self Reset Model, now fully integrated into the “Break from Alcohol” program. This unique model offers participants a structured, compassionate approach, guiding them through deep self-reflection and actionable strategies for discovering their truest selves, and creating lasting behavioral change.

“The strength and courage I witnessed in my brothers inspire me daily,” Ross explains. “If my journey helps even one person reclaim their authenticity, the struggles will have found their purpose.”

Participants have reported remarkable outcomes, including renewed relationships, improved mental and physical health, and a profound sense of purpose. “Ross’s approach is uniquely compassionate and effective,” says one participant. “It’s not just sobriety coaching; it’s about completely rediscovering your true desires and compassionately living an authentic, alcohol-free lifestyle.”

Ross King’s deeply human story, rooted in resilience and renewal, offers powerful insights and genuine hope amid escalating alcohol dependency nationwide.
