Dr. Skondra is a an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at The University of Chicago and the Director of J. Terry Ernest Ocular Imaging Center. She is a highly respected, board-certified ophthalmologist and retina specialist, with a particular focus on the medical and surgical treatment of vitreoretinal diseases. She in an expert in delivering care for diabetic eye disease, retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, eye trauma, ocular/vitreous hemorrhage, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, inflammation/uveitis and intraocular infections, with advanced training and expertise in surgical repair of complex diabetic retinal detachments. She completed her Ophthalmology Residency at Weill Cornell Medical College, New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York followed by 2 years of surgical vitreoretinal fellowship at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary where she was selected as a Harvard Alcon Clinical Scholar. She received her medical degree from the University of Crete Medical School in Greece in 2001 summa cum laude, top of her class with the higher average grade point in the history of the medical school, giving her nearly two decades of experience in her field. Wanting to further her training she completed PhD and postdoctoral research fellowship in University of Crete and Harvard Medical School prior to her clinical training.
Dr. Skondra is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. To stay up to date in her field, she remains a professional member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, Vitreous Buckle Society and European Association of Vision and Eye Research.
In addition to her clinical expertise, Dr. Skondra is an active researcher. As a physician-scientist, she is dedicated to investigating methods to improve treatment strategies for retinal conditions and is currently engaged in clinical and translational research in diabetes, macular degeneration and other retinal diseases. Dr. Skondra has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, presented her work in multiple national and international meetings, and serves as scientific reviewer for ophthalmology journals. She was recently selected as one of 20 Emerging Vision Scientists by National Alliance for Vision and Eye Research.
Throughout her career, Dr. Skondra has received several prestigious awards, including the University of Chicago OVS Innovation Award, VBS “Best Gear” surgical award, Retina Society Raymond Margherio Award, AUPO Research Award, ARVO/Alcon Early Career Clinician Scientist Award, Joslin-Tonseth Research Fellowship Award and the Knights Templar Award.
