Discover cultural awareness, Black history, and leadership development with award-winning children’s book author Dr. Artika Tyner

Founder of non-profit organization Planting People Growing Justice launches a 35-book collection for people of all ages

Saint Paul, MN – Dr. Artika Tyner is an award-winning children’s book author and the founder of the nonprofit Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute. Tyner recently launched a collection of 35 books, focusing on African American culture and history to foster youth leadership development.

The author uses her own personal experiences to craft through-provoking books and educational material. In addition to promoting cultural awareness and leadership using Black characters, Tyner aims to improve literacy amongst young readers.

The number of Black authors and Black characters in books has declined in recent years. Tyner’s award-winning books ensure Black voices are heard and stimulate readers to discover joy in reading who would otherwise go uninspired. Earlier this year, Planting People Growing Justice announced its aim of increasing diversity and representation in print. Tyner’s collection of 35 inspiring books shows the nonprofit’s dedication to young readers.

Literacy is an area Tyner wants to improve. The National Assessment of Education Progress reported that only 18% of Black eighth-grade students read at a “proficiency” level in 2017. According to Planting People Growing Justice, illiteracy plays a role in future incarceration. Moreover, illiterate students are more likely to leave school without graduating.

By focusing her books on African American heritage, history, and culture, Tyner aims to interest young students in reading. Tyner also introduces young readers to a myriad of career possibilities they can pursue and helps to create the leaders of the future. All 35 books in her collection are aimed to improve the lives of children, but adults can benefit from reading them, too.

Tyner’s books are available from PPGJ Press, a Black woman-owned publishing house. Learn more about Planting People Growing Justice at its official website.
