Florida’s Voice for Championing the Phosphate Industry Launches Phosphate Innovation Initiative

The initiative will support the sustainable and beneficial use of phosphogypsum

Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, the Florida Phosphate Council announced the creation of the Phosphate Innovation Initiative, aimed at building support for the sustainable and beneficial use of phosphogypsum (PG), with the ambitious goal of a “zero waste” future. The initiative will present fact-based educational information about PG and the current use of gypstacking to better inform policymakers and the public about the essential phosphate manufacturing industry.

The Phosphate Innovation Initiative is yet another example of the industry’s commitment to environmental sustainability and manufacturing efficiency. Recycling and reusing industrial byproducts benefits the environment, the economy and the public. The Phosphate Innovation Initiative will provide the facts and science related to PG use opportunities.

Phosphate is an essential nutrient that helps grow crops, with no suitable substitute. PG is a byproduct of the phosphate fertilizer manufacturing process. Thirty-year-old federal regulations require PG be placed in gypstacks, and allows for certain limited agricultural and scientific uses. However, 21 countries have harnessed PG for its innovative use potential, such as a road base material. If they can do it, so can the United States. In fact, multiple countries are using 100% of their PG for various purposes, including agriculture and construction materials.

The benefits of putting PG to practical use include conservation of limited natural resources, reducing industrial water use, providing an alternative to above-ground storage in gypstacks, and conserving land that would otherwise be needed for storage. The Phosphate Innovation Initiative will help stakeholders better understand these goals, secure the future of an essential American industry, protect domestic food security and help build a more sustainable world.
