Food Justice Coalition Seeks Support to Build Out Private Kitchen

Salt Lake City, UT – Local charity supporting food insecurity seeks community support for a kitchen build out. Food Justice Coalition has been making 1,600 meals every month as well as hosting a free lunch program for numerous families.

Recently the building owner of their current kitchen shut down their free lunch program, causing it to be temporarily moved.

In order to do more impactful work, Food Justice Coalition needs agency over their space. They need a physical location they own and operate where no one can turn away the people they serve. In their location they will create a space where everyone is respected and treated with dignity regardless of income, background, or zip code.

Food Justice Coalition often receives requests to host large groups of volunteers from academic institutions and corporations throughout the Wasatch front. Unfortunately, they have to decline 90% of these requests because their current kitchen space only allows for five volunteers at a time. A larger space would allow them to spread their work far and wide with many different groups so that they may collectively provide food security for all Utahns.

According to Jeanette Padilla Vega, founder of Food Justice Coalition, “Ending hunger is within our grasp. Investments in education and infrastructure are integral for organizations doing critical work on the ground. A physical kitchen space dedicated to our work will allow us to bring in more volunteers, host large groups in learning sessions, offer job training, host our after-school program on site, and grow our impact exponentially.”
