Get Down to Business Accelerator Names PPGJ Press & Bookstore a Semifinalist

Dr. Artika Tyner, founder of Planting People Growing Justice Press and Bookstore, has been named a semifinalist for the 2022 Get Down to Business Accelerator. It was selected from nearly 50 applicants.

Hosted by Bell Bank, The Get Down Coffee Co. and Neighborhood Development Center, winners and semifinalists were honored during a live celebration on July 18, 2022, at the 3M Open golf tournament. Individuals had the opportunity to network with other Minnesota business leaders, investors, and mentors. The event was funded by Bell Bank, the 3M Open Fund, and Neighborhood Development Center.

Founded in 2017, Planting People Growing Justice Press and bookstore is a Black, woman-owned social enterprise established to increase diversity in books and promote leadership development. Its very first publication, “Justice Makes a Difference: The Story of Miss Freedom Fighter, Esquire,” won a variety of prestigious children’s book awards.

The PPGJ bookstore promotes literacy, cultural awareness, and leadership development through children’s books that are representative of the BIPOC community. Representation in books is essential. The bookstore’s offerings provide stories encompassing culture, history, discovery, and empowerment. Books are designed to inspire, encourage a joy of reading, and help disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline. The books celebrate diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Planting People Growing Justice Press and bookstore hosts a variety of events that includes book fairs, pop-up shops, book giveaways at schools, and monthly virtual events where Black authors read their own books. The bookstore and its publications have won a wide variety of awards, including The Social Enterprise Impact Showcase 2020.

Being named a semifinalist in the Get Down to Business Accelerator is validation of the work the PPGJ Press and Bookstore is doing to inspire the youth of today to be the leaders of tomorrow. The Accelerator and special event celebrate the accomplishments of entrants and provide increased community exposure.
