“The lockdown made me give up on being social. The world looked bleak, and I had that urge to run into the wilderness and be alone,” explains Toronto artist, Holy Ramen. Through expressive storytelling, ‘Sanctuary’ offers a relatable narrative of the desire to escape reality and its hardships. Emotive and dreamy, Holy Ramen’s striking vocals sweep over the haze of electric guitar and the reassurance of the driving drums. Stepping away from her familiar territory of hiphop, ‘Sanctuary’ invites rock influences into her soundscape.
Beneath the gritty guitar solo and hypnotic beat, Holy Ramen’s melodic vocal line is the perfect blend of infectious and eerie. There’s a haunting quality to the track, that speaks of a dystopian universe, mirroring the bleakness of the lyrical content. Verse two welcomes spoken word from Holy Ramen, a wave of calmness in the easy flow, as if the world passes by in slow motion.
