IKSTARR’s latest single ‘WILLEMINA’ off to a flying start

4/6/20, London, UK—Ikstarr’s new single WILLEMINA from his upcoming second album is already receiving significant attention on popular YouTube, streaming platforms and social media. Sonically, the inspired producers helped emphasise the artistes’ afro-centric vibe, paying homage to West African Highlife and Afrobeat music with its melodic lyrics, percussion and adherence to the aesthetics of new wave Afrobeat and Afro-pop.

It makes sense since Ikstarr—born Bennie ‘Ike’ Opene — is British Nigerian and from an early age been influenced by the music he listened to growing up.

“I grew up listening to a phenomenal spectrum of music thanks to my parents. Mainly work from the Greats. The classics, a lot of it very afro-centric ”.

Undoubtedly, Ikstarr’s music was influenced, by the likes of Fela Kuti, Nat King Cole, Bob Marley, Notorious B.I.G and more recently artistes like Davido. Nonetheless, Ikstarr is no newcomer to the afro hip-hop scene, having previously self-released his debut album HARMONY in 2018.

Few debut independent albums have been received with such an earnest reception. After months of working on new music for the second album, Ikstarr will be taking a quick break to promote the lead single WILLEMINA, a saccharine, highlife, afrobeat infused anthem which is now available on most streaming platforms. Additionally, Ikstarr is planning a 15,000ft tandem jump to support social justice initiatives around the world.
