Kinara Health and Home Care Services’ New Public Service Announcement Highlights Key Signs That Kids May Be Suffering from Pandemic-related Stress

The message provides parents with a list of symptoms to watch for that might indicate their child needs counseling.

Washington, D.C. – February 24, 2021 – Kinara Health and Home Care Services released a public service announcement today stating that there are key signs of pandemic-related stress that parents should be on the lookout for in their children as kids continue to suffer the effects of school closings due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In the statement, Kinara covered seven symptoms that parents should watch for to detect depression, anxiety and general dis-ease in their children where counseling could prove helpful. These symptoms include reduced academic effort, having trouble sleeping or sleeping too much, irritability or rage, being hungry all the time or a change in weight, lack of attention to personal hygiene or appearance, lack of interest in activities previously enjoyed, and difficulty remembering things or in being able to focus.

“Children have suffered greatly throughout the pandemic.” Said Kinara CEO Dr Eban Ebai. “They have lost out on vital experiences to their development such as being around their peers, being in a classroom setting where they could practice actively participating in learning, and having the chance to develop critical thinking skills in real world social settings. After nearly a year of this, we have found more and more children are exhibiting signs of stress that could be addressed with the help of counseling. It’s our mission to get this message out there so children get the help they need during this challenging time.”

According to the CDC, mental health-related emergency department visits among children aged 5-11 increased by 24% in 2020 with that number rising to 31% for children in the 12-17 age group (Source: CDC).

“Recognizing the seriousness of the statistics, the caring professionals at Kinara will continue to look for ways to educate the public about mental health issues related to the pandemic.” Continued Ebai.

D.C. area residents who suspect their children are experiencing stress and anxiety are encouraged to schedule a telecounseling service appointment with Kinara. To learn more and to book an appointment online, visit https://kinarahcs.com/#.
