Medieval Mysticism and the Mystery of the Divine Name: Independent Author Highlights Historical Series Ahead of the London Book Fair

London, United Kingdom — As the international publishing world prepares to gather for the London Book Fair, independent author and biblical researcher Antony Hylton is drawing attention to an ambitious historical series exploring one of the most intriguing spiritual movements of the medieval era.

Hylton’s series, The Name Trilogy: Mysticism, Prophecy, and the Struggle for the Divine Name (1240–1347), tells the story of Jewish mystics, scholars, and religious thinkers who believed that understanding the sacred Divine Name of God could unlock the secrets of prophecy and the coming of the Messiah.

Blending historical research with narrative storytelling, the series explores the dramatic religious debates that unfolded across medieval Europe during a time when many believed the world stood on the threshold of prophetic fulfillment.

At the heart of the story is Abraham Abulafia (1240–1291), one of the most controversial Jewish mystics of the Middle Ages. Abulafia developed a remarkable method of prophetic meditation based on the Hebrew letters of the divine name. Through breathing patterns, letter permutations, and contemplative prayer, he believed individuals could experience prophetic insight.

His teachings attracted followers across Europe but also provoked strong opposition from established rabbinic authorities who viewed his claims of prophetic experience with deep suspicion.

Abulafia’s life culminated in one of the most unusual episodes in medieval religious history—his attempt to confront the Pope in Rome, convinced that his message carried prophetic significance.

“The medieval world was full of people searching for divine revelation,” says Hylton. “Figures like Abulafia believed that the sacred name of God contained a hidden spiritual power capable of opening the door to prophecy. Their story is both historically real and profoundly dramatic.”

A Story of Prophecy, Conflict, and Religious Transformation

The series unfolds across three major narrative arcs that follow the rise of prophetic mysticism and its impact on Jewish and Christian thought.

Book One: The Shooting Star
The opening volume introduces Abraham Abulafia and the emergence of prophetic Kabbalah within the vibrant intellectual culture of medieval Spain. The narrative explores the tensions between mystical experience and traditional religious authority.

Book Two: The Year of Jubilee
The second volume examines the growing wave of apocalyptic expectation surrounding the prophetic year 1290, when many medieval interpreters believed biblical prophecy might reach fulfillment. Mystical ideas about the divine name spread across Europe as scholars and seekers debated the meaning of prophecy.

Book Three: The Tau (Part I and Part II)
The final volume, presented in two parts, focuses on the dramatic story of Rabbi Avner of Burgos, a Jewish intellectual who later converted to Christianity and became the writer Alfonso of Valladolid. His transformation reflects the deep theological tensions between Jewish and Christian interpretations of messianic prophecy during the late Middle Ages.

Together, the volumes trace a remarkable intellectual journey through mysticism, philosophy, and religious identity in medieval Europe.

Medieval Mysticism and the Mystery of the Divine Name

Historical Research Meets Narrative Storytelling

While grounded in historical sources, The Name Trilogy is written in an accessible narrative style intended to bring the spiritual struggles of the medieval world to life for modern readers.

The books explore themes of faith, prophecy, identity, and the enduring human search for divine revelation, offering a window into a period when scholars and mystics believed that sacred language itself could unlock the mysteries of heaven.

“Many people imagine the Middle Ages as a quiet period intellectually,” Hylton explains. “But in reality it was filled with intense debates about prophecy, revelation, and the nature of God. These books attempt to recover that forgotten drama.”

An Independent Voice in Global Publishing

The series is published through Hylton’s independent publishing company A Michael Hylton Har Tziyon AS, part of a broader creative initiative that includes books, music, and multimedia projects exploring spiritual traditions and historical themes.

Writing under the creative imprint Qol Tziyon Covenant Messenger, Hylton has produced numerous works examining biblical interpretation, spirituality, and religious history.

By highlighting The Name Trilogy during the week of the London Book Fair, Hylton hopes to introduce the series to readers and journalists interested in historical narratives that explore the intersection of faith, philosophy, and prophecy.

“The search for the divine name has fascinated believers and scholars for centuries,” Hylton says. “These books invite readers to step into the world of medieval mystics who believed that understanding the sacred name could change history.”
