New York Based Civil Rights Attorney Becomes A Screenwriter Finalist At The 16th Annual Peachtree Village International Film Festival With A Timely Story Entitled “Sergeant Freeman”

OCT 15, 2021 – New York based playwright, writer, criminal justice professor, and civil rights attorney Gloria J.Browne-Marshall becomes a finalist at the 16^th annual Peachtree Village International Film Festival (PVIFF) with her screenplay “Sergeant Freeman.”  PVIFF takes place virtually on October 21-23^rd via www.pviffatl.com.

Synopsis:

African-American Army Sergeant Stella Freeman’s college-bound daughter Keisha goes missing on the day Freeman becomes the first woman to train the Army’s new Urban Terrorism platoon. A single mom and widow, Freeman is fighting to find her daughter while the Army pressures her to represent women in this life-changing assignment to lead the platoon, filled with in-fighting young soldiers. To rescue her daughter, Sergeant Freeman must enter the enemies’ lair of White supremacists led by a rogue ex-military criminal terrorizing a poverty-stricken Pennsylvania town being used to hoard weapons for a race war.

Gloria’s literary influences are Alice Walker, Gabriel Marquez, Toni Morrison and writer, activist, playwright James Baldwin.  Gloria trained through various workshops and classes that include the Yale Writers Workshop, Lighthouse Writers Workshop, Aspen Words, Breadloaf, VONA, Kweli and more.

“I am a multi-genre creative. I make sense of the world by using art and advocacy which, for me, includes film, fiction, theatre, nonfiction, and poetry. My screenplay “Freeman” is about the racial battles faced for 400 years distilled into an action/drama with White supremacists,” said Gloria.

Gloria’s filmed stage-plays “Dreams of Emmett Till” and “SHOT: Caught a Soul” are winning awards at film festivals. “SHOT” received a Pulitzer Center grant and will be published by TRW/Plays. She is the author of “She Took Justice: The Black Woman, Law, and Power.”
