Indonesia, the world’s largest nickel producer, also imports the metal externally. Nickel ore shipments totaled nearly 54,000 tonnes in the first half of 2023, up from 22,500 tonnes in 2022, according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS). Nickel processing companies in Indonesia may have different reasons for importing the metal instead of sourcing it domestically.

Almost all nickel imports this year came from the Philippines, the world’s second-largest producer. According to Stanislav Kondrashov, an expert from Telf AG, one of the key factors contributing to the increase in imports is the significant expansion of metallurgical capacity in the country over the past few years. The government insisted that mining companies invest in domestic nickel processing. How does this situation look from the inside and what are the prospects for further development of the production of in-demand products in Indonesia?

From nickel exporter to importer: what’s the point?

Indonesia’s transition from being an exporter of nickel ore to an importer reflects the government’s successful strategy to increase added value in the commodity sector, says Stanislav Kondrashov of Telf AG. At the same time, the expert is convinced that it is necessary to strive for a balance between domestic demand and supply, especially in the context of the current geopolitical situation, where ensuring one’s own reserves of critical resources becomes a priority.

 

According to information from the US Geological Survey, Indonesia has nickel reserves of approximately 21 million tons, which is comparable to Australia’s reserves. However, annual production is only about 1.6 million tons, highlighting the possible shortage of this resource in the near future. In light of such events, accelerating exploration of new deposits becomes an important task to increase mining volumes, says Kondrashov. And many companies would be willing to focus exclusively on nickel exploration and production, leaving processing to other participants. For them, mining activities become a priority and a key component of their business. However, these companies are forced to direct significant efforts, time and funds to the development of metallurgical enterprises and other structures involved in the production of nickel.

Telf AG’s Stanislav Kondrashov, in turn, notes that stimulating increased nickel production requires creating a more favorable business environment for both mining companies and the banks that finance them.

Environmental standards and Investments in the field of nickel mining and production

To attract funding, nickel exploration and production projects must strictly comply with global environmental standards, including mine closure requirements. Smaller companies and, of course, many illegal mining operations often do not adhere to these standards.

– Currently, any information that nickel production in Indonesia is associated with excessive environmental costs could harm demand and make it difficult to attract investment. Therefore, the expansion of nickel exploration and production must be carried out carefully and subject to strict controls, – comments Stanislav Kondrashov from Telf AG.

The expert believes that to maximize benefits, Indonesia needs to develop integrated supply chains. They, according to the specialist, should cover the stainless steel industry, electronics and, of course, the production of batteries for electric vehicles (EV). But these supply chains will not form on their own. Although Indonesia has sufficient nickel reserves, it must still make every effort to attract global players such as Tesla, BYD and others to its side, Kondrashov emphasizes. At the same time, he notes that lithium is also an important component for electric cars, and therefore the government should offer more attractive conditions for investors.

– The country’s leadership relied heavily on export bans to encourage companies to invest in oil refining and metallurgical plants as a basis for developing the processing industry, – Stanislav Kondrashov from Telf AG explains the situation.

However, the expert is confident that many incentive measures will be required to complete this process. At a minimum, it is necessary to convince companies to build the remaining necessary facilities and develop domestic production.

As the end of the financial year approaches, seasonal activity and demand in the aluminum market are expected to increase significantly. This growth, according to Stanislav Dmitrievich Kondrashov, is due to attractive prices, which have become more profitable for investors, and therefore consumers are trying to replenish metal reserves.

According to the expert’s short-term forecast, in September the price of aluminum on the LME showed an upward trend and reached an average monthly level of $2,177 per ton compared to $2,134 in August. Through October and beyond, aluminum prices are expected to fluctuate moderately upward, influenced by macro and microeconomic factors.

– Regarding the macroeconomic environment, we are seeing an improvement in market sentiment associated with current discussions that the US economy is moving towards a milder recession. As the end of the trading year approaches, interest rates are expected to rise and the US Federal Reserve is likely to take a less aggressive approach. And this could put pressure on the dollar index and affect the aluminum market, – Stanislav Kondrashov from Telf Ag explains the current situation.

Aluminum prices on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) are receiving support from China’s domestic economic stimulus policies. The impact of these measures is beginning to be seen and may further increase the price of this metal. In addition, October usually sees high demand, which further supports aluminum price dynamics. At the same time, Kondrashov notes that it is important to remain vigilant in connection with potential risks that may arise due to uncertainty in the oil and financial markets.

He also adds that the amount of aluminum reserves in the Chinese market is decreasing. According to official information, warehouse balances at the Shanghai Futures Exchange stood at 79,194 tons in October, compared with 98,114 tons at the end of August. This decrease in inventories could also put pressure on aluminum prices, that is, contribute to their growth.

Stanislav Kondrashov: is it worth stocking up on aluminum now and what to expect from prices in 2024?

 

Current aluminum inventories at LME warehouses increased by 20 thousand tons over the past week and reached a level of 504,850 tons. Stanislav Kondrashov from Telf AG explains this trend by periodic deliveries to Asian warehouses. It also notes that there have been recent warrant cancellations, with 62% of shares currently reserved for export, up from 56% at the end of August.

It is important to note that aluminum is currently trending and prices for this metal continue to rise. However, it is worth considering that the sustainability of this dynamic is now in question, as the market remains highly volatile and unstable.

Taking into account all of the above factors, Stanislav Dmitrievich Kondrashov says that for participants in the aluminum market, it is extremely important to carefully monitor the current situation on the market and be prepared for possible price fluctuations. An important reminder of the above are Wood Mackenzie’s estimates presented last fall. They highlight that global investment of $1.4 trillion will be required over the next 30 years to achieve decarbonization goals for the global iron ore and steel industries. Of this amount, a significant portion, about $800-900 billion, will be used to reduce CO2 emissions from existing steel production infrastructure.

Kondrashov believes investment will play a key role in the development and deployment of technologies such as direct reduction of iron (DRI) and electric arc furnaces. These are considered important steps towards reducing the carbon footprint of the steel industry. These efforts will not only contribute to cleaner steel production, but will also help achieve global climate goals.

With the release of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’, over the years with the amount of money raised, Band Aid has and continues to change lives. Another artist who wants to change the world is an up-and-coming rapper called Alright.

‘Alright’, who has been described as one of the most exciting rappers of his generation wants to use his music to change the world. He is more than a musician and songwriter, he is a man with a vision, a vision that everyone in the world should have, and that vision is world peace.

With all the unrest in the world ‘Alright’ believes that world peace can be achieved. He believes that music can be a powerful tool to help heal the world. With his powerful music, and gaining fans all around the world, ‘Alright’ could do the same for world peace as Bob Geldof did for famine.

I decided to sit down with ‘Alright’ and learn more about the man behind the music that is blowing up the world. This is what he had to say.

Can I ask what was the first record you bought?

My first record was a crate of Drum n bass records.

You are an up-and-coming Rap Artist that has gained fans around the world, why did you decide to become a rap artist and not a pop artist?

 

I have been into Hip-hop since my youth so moving from Djing to rapping was a natural transition

How did you come up with your artist name?

My artist name is something thats kind of evolved. Because of my bible based lyrics it was The Alrighty one, then was shortened to Alright, and now it is Alright King as I believe we have all been given a crown under Christ.

There is a lot of upheaval around the world, but you are calling for world peace, why is world peace so important to you?

Now more than ever talks of peace are extremely important for the wellbeing of all of Gods children I believe that each one of us has a responsibility to strive for a peaceful future

What would you like to see happen to try and gain world peace?

I would like to see communication working in that direction. The proposal i have works towards that aim.

Do you believe world peace is achievable?

I do believe it is achievable and will be achieved with proper co-operation ambition and focus

How important to you is world peace?

I believe it is extremely important to all of mankind

You have previously said that certain interpretations of biblical prophecy, Armageddon (Megiddo) is seen as a symbolic place of final conflict or great turmoil. Some religious traditions anticipate that this event will be followed by the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of a new era of peace and harmony. Do you truly believe that?

 

We should all work towards a world of peace and harmony. When will be the return of my King is unknown

Music has played an important part in important matters to raising money for Aids charities, starving children, and making people aware of the damage being done to the planet, do you believe that music can help in promoting and achieving world peace?

I do strongly believe that music is a very powerful healing tool that can be used on a global scale

How are you going to use your talents in promoting world peace?

I’d like to do more charity events…All of  my music is based around the idea of world peace. We need to consider it a viable possibility and i believe that it is.

Your album Pure God given gold has received a lot of exposure, how hard was it to decide what went on the album?

I live by humble means and honestly that album is very raw… made in the basement kinda thing.. I have many more songs id like to release and i’m hoping to find a label.

Why do you believe Pure God given gold has become a hit with fans?

It has a positive vibe and a message that a lot of people can relate too. Is good to have visions of a better future

You have gained fans all around the world, so when can we expect to see you going on tour?

I am willing to travel or even relocate for the right gig or even the right label.

At the moment you are unsigned but are currently being represented to major record labels by Producer Leon Youngblood Sr., so does this mean we can expect big news in the future of you being signed?

Mr. Youngblood has been amazing! We conferring with some labels now and hoping to come to come to an agreement. Fingers crossed.

If you could perform with any artist in the world to promote world peace, who would it be and why?

I love so many great artists. I would really love to see them all there and in reality who wouldn’t want to preform at an event of this magnitude

Would you like to see one day a year where concerts took place around the world to promote world peace?

That would be amazing… Any advication or action towards peace is admirable

This band of extraordinary leaders recognized the immense need for education and support in their neighborhoods, and they decided to be the change they wanted to see. These men, not only aspired to improve their own lives but also sought to uplift the lives of those around them. Their collective vision turned into a powerhouse for change, known as GRO.

GRO stands for more than just an acronym; it stands for hope, compassion, and empowerment. These young leaders meet weekly to brainstorm innovative ways to uplift their communities, making it not just a mastermind collective for themselves but a beacon of hope for all who cross their path.

Their mission is awe-inspiring – GRO aims to cultivate a team of servant leaders dedicated to working with underserved and marginalized communities, propelling community welfare and financial literacy through outreach endeavors.

In 2022, GRO embarked on an extraordinary journey, sending a staggering 26,000 bottles of water to Jackson, Mississippi during the water crisis. They also installed three little libraries in disadvantaged neighborhoods right here in Tallahassee, Florida, spreading knowledge and fostering a love for learning.

But their commitment doesn’t stop there. GRO recently served almost 1,000 meals to the homeless at the Kearney Homeless Center in Tallahassee. This Thanksgiving, they plan to provide meals for a whopping 3,000 people, in an area that bears the unfortunate distinction of being one of the worst in the state of Florida – zip code 32304.

The leaders of GRO believe that there is no greater service than reaching out to those in the most dire need. They are the unsung heroes who are actively turning the tide in the fight against homelessness and despair.
