Rent-to-own furniture startup Pabio raises $1 Million pre-seed and joins Y Combinator

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, home and living have become more important than ever as more people are spending most of their time indoors and working from home. Whereas before people were saving up to go on vacation every year, they no longer want to wait and want to have that 5-star hotel comfort at home. However today, apartments are filled with cheap Swedish furniture led by a few big box retailers. Pabio wants to fix this while offering a sustainable alternative through rent-to-own furniture with personalized interior design.

“Our mission is to democratize beautiful living,” says co-founder Anand Chowdhary. “When we asked our friends why they live in apartments with awful interior, they gave us two reasons: first, interior design seems elitist and expensive; and second, buying a full apartment interior is (a) too expensive, and (b) doesn’t make sense if you rent an apartment and don’t know how long you’re going to stay in it. We figured that if we combine both things—interior design and furniture rental—we can create an affordable package for tenants that’s still very high-quality,” adds Carlo Badini, co-founder and CEO of Pabio.

With Pabio, customers receive a personalized interior design proposal with photorealistic renders of what their fully furnished apartment will look like. Customers upload a floor plan of their apartment and take some photos, and Pabio generates a 3D model of their apartment. If they like the concept, they can sign up, and Pabio will deliver and install all furniture and is paid a monthly subscription fee. They also fully insure all items and offer optional add-on services like electricians and bi-weekly cleaning, so dropping coffee on the sofa is no problem. Once the customer moves out of their apartment, Pabio takes all the furniture back, renovates it, and places it in a new apartment at a discounted price. Since all monthly payments go towards ownership, customers can also choose to pay the difference at the end of their subscription and own all furniture.

Pabio also recently closed its pre-seed round of $1 million in funding, led by several angel investors and two venture funds, Session.VC and Swiss Startup Group. The startup launched in 2021 and is backed by Y Combinator, Silicon Valley’s most prestigious program for early-stage startups. Previously, YC has invested in some of the most valuable startups, like Airbnb, Dropbox, and Coinbase, the latter of which had an IPO earlier this year. Pabio is also one of the first companies founded in Switzerland to receive an investment from YC. Their partners at YC are Michael Seibel (co-founder of Twitch and Socialcam), Tim Brady (former Chief Product Officer at Yahoo!), Calvin French-Owen (co-founder of Segment), Diana Hu (co-founder of Escher Reality, acquired by Niantic).

Prior to Pabio, Carlo founded the Swiss design agency Cleverclip at the age of 20 and bootstrapped it to 40 employees and millions of euros in revenue. Cleverclip designs explainer videos and interactive content for enterprises such as Lufthansa, BMW, Hugo Boss, and Samsung. He was nominated to EY Entrepreneur of the Year and listed under Forbes 30 Under 30. His co-founder Anand previously founded Oswald Labs, an accessibility technology startup that builds products for people with disabilities, and Indian e-commerce retailer Melangebox, at the age of 19. He is also a top open-source contributor and listed in GitHub Stars and Forbes 30 Under 30. As you see, both cofounders have strong startup backgrounds and are ready to disrupt this dated furniture industry while offering a beautiful, luxurious experience at an affordable price tag.

Environmentalist Reaches 45 Million Trees Over 4 Decades

Environmentalist, retired software engineer and musician, Hart Pearson “Sebastian” Cunningham has achieved the impressive feat of planting 45 million trees over 40 years. He aims to reach a trillion trees in his lifetime.

Hart Cunningham is on a mission to plant one trillion trees. In just four decades, he has participated in planting more than 45 million and is now committed to reaching his goal. The environmentalist and musician wants to spend the next 40 years turning 45 million into a trillion.

Hart Pearson “Sebastian” Cunningham was raised by artists seeking a life that reflected well on Mother Earth. Hart’s quest to plant a trillion trees began at age 3 in Dominica with local vegetation. At age 5, then living in Nova Scotia, he continued his passion for trees with an apple orchard. By the time Hart was 16, he had planted 740 trees, having joined his Buckley High School Classes of ’93 – ’95 (152 students in total across three years, including Rashida Jones) to spend 14 weeks planting trees on weekends across California.

Hart spent three terms at The Michael G. Foster School of Business at the University of Washington in Seattle. There, he wrote his thesis on “Economics Related to Humanity and Environment” at age 21, continuing his interest in and passion for nature and the environment. He returned to California to finish his Master’s in Economics from Claremont Graduate University. He was the youngest recorded to achieve this feat at age 22.

Hart’s tree planting increased as his monetary resources grew, and he became the only Ernst and Young three-times ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ Finalist. He has continued to strive to plant as many trees as possible throughout adulthood. In total, Hart has funded 19 drone or aerial-focused seed pods, increasing his count to 45 million trees planted in 40 years of service to Mother Earth.

Hart retired from software architecture at age 38. Since taking early retirement, he has run for POTUS (Hart2020) at age 42, with a campaign focused on solving climate change and income inequality globally. Hart is now concentrating on spending the next four decades aiming to reach his lifetime goal of planting a trillion trees. With more time and freedom to dedicate himself to this goal, he is determined to do even more to save and support the environment. More personally, he is also invested in his physical health and wellbeing with a focus on contortion.

Ball, who signed with the Hornets’ Summer League team, has impressed so far for the team. In Las Vegas Summer League action, the middle Ball brother has averaged 10.5 points and 2.3 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per game. Notably, he’s shooting over 40 percent from three-point range and has consistently looked like he belongs in the competition.

The Hornets are aware. NBA reporter Jordan Schulz said Sunday that the Hornets “love” Ball and that he has a chance for a spot in the G League or even the NBA

If all three brothers are playing NBA ball to start the season, then their father, LaVar Ball would finally see his vision complete.

Twilio Flex Now Allows Twitter Direct Messages

Twitter’s own research found 64% of customers on the platform would rather message a support handle than call up a business, and 75% expected to receive a response within 15 minutes. Twilio Flex now allows for bringing Twitter support requests into their platform, helping meet the demands of customers while leveraging interactive features of Twitter’s Direct Message API such as ‘Quick Replies’ and ‘Buttons’.

Twilio Flex has provided these initial setup directions before implementation:

  • Set up a Twilio account (if you don’t already have one).
  • Created a Flex project using the support walkthrough.
  • Completed steps 1 and 2 of Twitter’s Getting Started with Webhooks guide where you’ll create a Twitter app and request access to the Account Activity API.

While Flex doesn’t provide a Twitter channel out of the box, it does give developers the power to build and add custom channels. To create an open line of conversation between a customer on Twitter and an agent on Flex, the platform needs an application that listens for updates from each side and forwards the messages accordingly so that both the customer and agent are kept in sync. The application should:

Study Finds that 33.4% of B2B Marketers Plan to Increase Budget with Focus on New Channels, Attribution and Data

The survey finds that B2B marketers are focused on future growth, with more than a third (33.4%) planning to increase budgets in the near term across a host of omnichannel initiatives.
