Ohio Teen Filmmaker’s Latest Movie Enters The International Film Festival Circuit

The Film’s World Premier, Awaiting To Be Claimed

Following his critically-acclaimed film SUBNIVEAN, the world premiere for filmmaker Jonathan Perry’s upcoming movie CROOKERY is up for grabs. Filmed in Ohio, last December, CROOKERY explores an ordinary family evening’s descent during a hostile home intrusion.

Ohio-native Jonathan Perry is an incoming University of Montana freshman who began his early career in the film industry four years ago, writing scripts online for other filmmakers and selling the copyright to his work totaling $10,000. Perry is best known for his 2019 film SUBNIVEAN, which garnered critical acclaim and was subsequently acquired by Amazon Prime Video for international distribution, making him the youngest director on any major streaming service at the age of 17.

The film CROOKERY introduces the viewer to a uniquely structured timeline of drama that can play as a continuous loop while remaining in chronological order. Perry states in a film synopsis, “Nestled in the quiet suburbs, an ordinary family’s argumentative evening mixes with a hostile home intrusion. The father falsely defends his home against two looters trying to break in, while the truth is the real criminal trying to break out.” Jonathan went on to explain, “I knew Crookery was destined for film festival audiences and in need of a fast-paced format. Thus, I cut up the script and shifted the timeline pieces around the dinner table to create a story structure like no other. An even mix of two timelines that cuts between the prior evening’s orange tinted exposition and the later evening’s blue tinted action, allowing me to control the audience’s perception of characters.”

At the pandemic’s peak, 19-year-old Perry worked with local city officials and over 50 industry members including some of Ohio’s top film producers to create CROOKERY. The film’s estimated production budget of $16,300 was financially executed without losing screen value for a mere $2,200. As one of the only productions approved to operate during an infectious surge last winter, CROOKERY’S filming resulted in zero cases of COVID-19 from the sanitized set.

As CROOKERY awaits release, Perry is continuing his gap year in Santa Monica, California to work with Simple Films and Activision Blizzard as a lead writer and director of the hit game, Call of Duty. During which, he unveiled Muybridge Inc., a production company that will manufacture cinema engineering technology alongside his future films. This fall, Perry will attend the University of Montana’s Davidson Honors College after receiving a generous scholarship. He plans to compete in The Student Academy Awards as Perry is currently residing in Puerto Rico, developing his largest film to date.

For two weeks, all eyes will be on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics taking place July 23 through August 8. Over 11,000 athletes are slated to compete, even as the city faces a State of Emergency due to COVID-19. As we watch our favorite summer sports over the coming days, it’s easy to see why we see athletes almost as superheroes. These men and women undergo years of rigorous training, develop astounding mental strength and achieve nearly perfect physical peak performance.

As we enjoy the games, let’s remember that there are some lessons we can all learn from these athletes – even lessons we can apply to our financial fitness. The mindset with which you approach your finances actually isn’t so different from an Olympian’s approach to their sport. 

Defining Your Goals

All athletes develop tailored goals to put them on the path to success. Financial goals are the same; if you don’t lay the groundwork for your financial future by establishing goals and priorities, the financial future you want won’t be guaranteed. 

Short-Term vs. Long-Term Goals

Athletes often have both short-term and long-term goals; a young track star may have a goal for their next meet while simultaneously working towards Olympic trials far into the future. 

When it comes to your finances, you want to think long-term. Those goals could manifest through a retirement savings account, or perhaps an eventual college fund for your children. What do you want your financial reality to look like in the long run? What can you do now to make it happen? 

Yet of course, establishing short-term goals is also crucial to your finances and intermingles with these long-term goals. For example, you might say “I am only going to spend ‘x’ percent of my paycheck this month,” or “I am going to set aside ‘x’ amount of money every month to save for a vacation next year.” By consciously thinking about your goals and how you can attain them, you’re already one step closer to financial fitness. 

Staying Disciplined 

Athletes are notorious for the hard work they put in. Staying in peak physical condition and aiming for constant improvement requires immense discipline, as does staying in peak financial condition. 

Even if you’re working with a financial advisor, you don’t have the equivalent of a coach that can bench you for failing to have discipline. An advisor can draw those lines for you, but you ultimately need to carry the will not to cross them. 

This is especially true when it comes to your spending habits; when you have a budget, stick to it without exceptions. Once you make an exception, it becomes easier and easier to keep doing so. Your goals are nothing if you don’t harbor the discipline to make them a reality. 

Stick With it 

The best athletes don’t give up, even when they fail; they stay committed and focused on their goals. Your finances can be unexpected. Even though having a financial plan is vital, things happen that we can’t possibly account for. 

Don’t be discouraged if you do happen to go over budget or your investments aren’t doing well. Just like an athlete: pick yourself back up, refocus, and keep putting in the work to reach your financial goals.

Tax Treatment for Family Members Working in the Family Business

What kind of business is a mom-and-pop operation? It’s probably not a question you pondered when you dreamed of going into business with your spouse. If your spouse is integral to carrying on its operations and shares in the profits and losses, you may consider yourselves partners without the formal partnership agreement.

The IRS is interested in your business arrangements. The agency says that if your business is a partnership, your spouse should report income or loss from the business on Form 1065 instead of opting to report income on a Schedule C, naming you as the sole proprietor.

But both spouses may elect treatment as a qualified joint venture instead of a partnership. Your business is a qualified joint venture if it conducts a trade or business in which:

  • The only members are a married couple who file a joint return.
  • Both spouses materially participate in the trade or business.
  • Both spouses elect not to be treated as a partnership.

Only businesses owned and operated by spouses as co-owners and not in the name of a state law entity — limited partnership or limited liability company — are eligible for qualified joint venture status. Spouses electing qualified joint venture status are sole proprietors for federal tax purposes. Each spouse must file a separate Schedule C to report his or her share of profits and losses.

There’s no need for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) unless the sole proprietorship must file excise, employment, alcohol, tobacco or firearms returns. But if you decide to designate the business as a qualified venture, one spouse cannot continue to use the partnership’s EIN. The EIN must stay with the partnership; it’s used by the partnership for any year in which the business doesn’t meet qualified joint venture requirements.

If the business has employees, either of the spouses as sole proprietors may report and pay employment taxes. In that case, the spouse, as an employer, must have an EIN for the sole proprietorship. If the company filed or paid employment taxes for part of the year under the partnership’s EIN, the spouse may be considered the employee’s successor employer for the purposes of figuring whether wages reached the Social Security and federal unemployment wage base limits.

How about if one spouse is employed by the other? The wages for the services of an individual who works for a spouse are subject to income tax withholding as well as Social Security and Medicare taxes but not to the Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA).

Suppose you employ a child. How is this handled so that you’re in compliance with IRS rules and regulations? Payments for a child under age 18 aren’t subject to Social Security or Medicare taxes if the business is a sole proprietorship or a partnership where both partners are the child’s parents. Payments to a child under 21 aren’t subject to FUTA. Payments are subject, however, to income tax withholding, regardless of your child’s age.

Here are the circumstances under which you would have to withhold income taxes and Social Security, Medicare and FUTA taxes:

  • If the work is being done for a corporation, even if it’s controlled by the worker’s parents.
  • If the work is accomplished for a partnership, even if the child’s parent is a partner, unless each partner is a parent of the child.

What if the parent is employed by the child? Wages for a parent are subject to income tax withholding as well as Social Security and Medicare taxes. But they’re not subject to FUTA taxes.

Employees complete Form W-4 so that the employer can withhold the correct federal income tax from the pay.

There are no laws against nepotism in private business but having family members work in your business presents some unique tax and employment situations.
