San Diego Community Assist (SDCA) to give out Laptops and Food Boxes to Kids and Families

San Diego, CA – January 15, 2021 – San Diego Community Assist (SDCA), a San Diego-based nonprofit organization, is pleased to announce that they will be giving out Laptops and Food Boxes to kids and families in need on March 13, 2021. This is to help kids, people, and families who are most affected by the Coronavirus pandemic get an education and other basic needs of livelihood.

The organization’s initiative is to raise $25,000 to issue laptops to kids who have been out of school as a result of the pandemic but with no technological facility to access online learning and also to issue food boxes to people and families who lose their jobs and are present with little or no source of income. This program is part of the organization’s relentless commitment to improving the quality of life in San Diego, California by providing educational as well as social assistance to people in need, especially in these difficult times.

COVID-19 has necessitated school closings throughout San Diego. School systems have turned to distance learning however students need access to personal computers in order to learn. Sadly because many kids in San Diego can’t afford computers their grades are in serious jeopardy. SDCA is raising funds to distribute computers to under privileged kids in San Diego on March 13. SDCA is also distributing food boxes to families in need. Each 8-10 pound box can feed a family for day.

“To ensure that kids and families in need can see hope in this dark times, we at San Diego Community Assist have to come up with this initiative to issue laptops to less privileged kids and food boxes to people and families in need. We hope this program will positively touch the lives of many kids and families as possible, who are not as lucky when it comes to eating a plateful of food or having the technology that we readily have access to,” said Xavier Mitchell, SDCA founder.

San Diego Community Assist (SDCA) was founded with the sole aim of improving the quality of life and paving the way for a brighter San Diego by providing business, medical, educational, and social services to people in need and also provide opportunities for career building and training. The organization has in recent months organized a series of social service programs and giveaway packages to help provide food and other basic necessities to workers still unemployed because of the pandemic, lower-income earners, and less privileged people in the community.

Musician Maximiliano Nealon teams up with non-profit to raise money to feed Alabama’s hungry during COVID-19 pandemic

Since opening its doors, Drexell and Honeybee’s Restaurant has fed the hungry in and around Brewton, Alabama. The restaurant accepts donations from patrons in lieu of charging diners for their meals.

Owners Lisa and Freddie McMillan trade meals for whatever customers can offer. Sometimes, meals are provided to patrons who cannot pay, ensuring they receive enough food to eat, while other customers donate a buck or two. The non-profit restaurant, which has helped thousands of people in one of the United States’ most food insecure states, is now looking for a little bit of help to keep the doors open and feeding the hungry.

Drexell and Honeybee’s was forced to close its dining room due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has swept the United States. The dining room used to be filled with tasty southern-style food and chatter from patrons. With the pandemic affecting millions, Drexell and Honeybee’s was forced to offer to-go meals only. Still, they serve more than 100 people a day, three days a week.

Unfortunately, with the dining room closed, the restaurant’s donation box is shut as patrons are not provided with anonymity when donating. Had the restaurant’s dining room been able to open, diners would be able to leave as much or as little money as they like when eating. Since closing the dining room, Drexell and Honeybee’s hasn’t received the donations they typically would. Yet, the non-profit restaurant is still giving out meals.

“We are not talking donations at the door for to-go meals, because everyone’s donation is private and we cannot offer privacy at the door currently,” Lisa McMillian said. “Our donation box is closed until we reopen our dining room later this year – if at all.”

Singer/songwriter Maximiliano Nealon learned about the work of Drexell and Honeybee’s and stepped up to help out the non-profit. Nealon wrote and recorded an exclusive song titled, “I was Hungry (and You Fed Me),” to help raise funds for Drexell and Honeybee’s. Nealon learned of the mission the McMillians have taken on, to feed the hungry, and pledged to help them.

The musician made “I was Hungry (and You Fed Me)” available for download on his Bandcamp page. The song costs just $1 to download and all proceeds from purchases go to keep Drexell and Honeybee’s open. The non-profit hopes to make $5,000 from downloads, which will allow them to keep the restaurant open and feeding people.

“If we can raise some funds with this gift that we have been given by Maximiliano, it will help keep us going until things get back to normal,” McMillian explained.

Nealon, a Spanish and English-language songwriter based in Portland, Oregon, writes music to inspire and provide hope. His latest song could give new hope to the McMillians and continue their mission of feeding the hungry.

Over 829,220 people in Alabama struggle with hunger. Over 250,000 are children. Around one in four children in the state go hungry every day. Drexell and Honeybee’s feeds those in need for food regardless if they have anything to donate.

Along with buying “I was Hungry (and You Fed Me)” for $1, there is a digital donations page in which donors can contribute.
