Young Innovators Take on Climate Change with OceanSense

Sudith Thota, a senior at Dublin High School, and his team are making waves in environmental science with their innovative project, OceanSense. This water health research analysis tool, developed by the team, attaches to the bottom of cargo ships, collecting vital data such as pH levels, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. By leveraging the vast network of cargo routes, OceanSense can monitor nearly the entire ocean, providing researchers with comprehensive data on how climate change is impacting marine ecosystems.

The project began as a school initiative, where Sudith and his teammates won an environmental award and secured around $5,000 in AWS funding. From there, they built 2-3 prototypes, working closely with researchers to fine-tune the tool to meet specific scientific needs. What started as a classroom idea quickly evolved into a fully-fledged initiative, leading to the filing of a provisional patent, followed by a utility patent. Now, the team continues to push OceanSense forward, aiming to make it a key asset in the global fight to protect marine biodiversity and address the far-reaching impacts of climate change. Their work exemplifies how youth-led collaboration can tackle pressing environmental challenges.

Young Environmentalist Empowers Sustainable Farming Through Audiobook and Projects

Sudith Thota, a senior at Dublin High School, has made significant strides in environmental science education by creating and publishing his audiobook, Rudiments of Aquaponics. With a passion for sustainable agriculture, Sudith not only wrote and edited this comprehensive guide on aquaponics but also successfully reached a broad audience, amassing over 150,000 listeners. The audiobook provides detailed insights into the fundamentals of aquaponics, covering everything from the basic principles of plant-fish symbiosis to practical tips for setting up and maintaining these innovative farming systems.

But Sudith didn’t stop at just educating others—he put his knowledge into action. Inspired by the positive reception of his audiobook, he has already moved forward with the hands-on design and construction of aquaponic farms, with 2-3 prototypes currently in development. In each project, Sudith incorporates the latest research, tailoring the designs to maximize efficiency and sustainability. These prototypes serve as a testament to his commitment to advancing sustainable farming practices.
