This water health research analysis tool, developed by the team, attaches to the bottom of cargo ships, collecting vital data such as pH levels, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. By leveraging the vast network of cargo routes, OceanSense can monitor nearly the entire ocean, providing researchers with comprehensive data on how climate change is impacting marine ecosystems.
The project began as a school initiative, where Sudith and his teammates won an environmental award and secured around $5,000 in AWS funding. From there, they built 2-3 prototypes, working closely with researchers to fine-tune the tool to meet specific scientific needs. What started as a classroom idea quickly evolved into a fully-fledged initiative, leading to the filing of a provisional patent, followed by a utility patent. Now, the team continues to push OceanSense forward, aiming to make it a key asset in the global fight to protect marine biodiversity and address the far-reaching impacts of climate change.
