Liberty Loomis, a novel by Susan Denman, is the story of Mayzie Jenkins, a naïve college student, who spends the summer of 1970 working at Liberty Loomis Hospital in the rural Catskill Mountains. A mix of complex relationships and clashing cultures trigger her recollection of a previously suppressed, dark childhood memory. Its haunting damage threatens to destroy Mayzie’s unspoiled image of her family and its innocent hometown.
Liberty Loomis uniquely combines poignancy with mystery as it deals with the conflicts in American society in the 1970’s while chronicling a young woman’s unusual path toward self-awareness. The rural setting in upstate New York is at once idyllic, yet true-to-life. The characters are skillfully drawn and memorable beyond the end of the book.
Although set in 1970, the themes of Liberty Loomis and the life lessons it teaches are timeless. While this coming-of-age story confronts the harsh realities of domestic violence, childhood abuse, autism, and controversial political and social injustices, it delivers an overall message of optimism, hope and redemption.
Denman challenges her readers to consider the impact a repressed childhood memory can have on one’s adult life, as well as the lasting harm created by individuals and communities who turn a blind eye to victims of abuse in their midst.
Liberty Loomis is a must read for those looking for an engrossing story with authentic, unforgettable characters.
