The Desi Hip Hop phenomena started over a decade ago by a handful of artists, Bohemia the Punjabi Rapper at the forefront of the movement and Hardik Dave’ aka Gujubhai behind the scenes developing the ecosystem & technology to scale globally. A decade long movement is now hitting an inflection point starting with India after recent announcements made by a major Bollywood production house Excel Entertainment. On Feb 14th the feature film Gully Boy is set to release on a projected 5,500 screens worldwide. With Ranveer Singh & Alia Bhatt as the leading roles, this film is setting the trajectory of Hip-Hop in India to over 700 Million youth.
A handful of Hip-Hop artists in India are currently creating an ecosystem and sustaining themselves but there is another wave of up n coming artists in every major metro ready to blow out. One such artist and crew that stands out is the the Khatarnaak Hip-Hop Collective. The New Delhi based group is one of the first to holistically represent all 5 elements of Hip-Hop, founded by one of India’s most exciting emcees, Sun J. He’s known for his distinct flow, tone, devastating delivery and his consistent ability to thrill audiences. Born into a family of modest means, Sun J provides a fresh perspective about real life in New Delhi. 2018 was a banner year for the artist, and he’s starting 2019 off on the right foot with his new single and music video “Dilli.” The title is slang for New Delhi, and the release coordinates with India’s Republic Day.
