Congratulations on getting engaged! This is such an exciting time of life and you should soak it all up. Enjoy the excitement, love, and planning for your future. As reality begins to settle in, there are a few things you need to do.
Here are ten things that you need to do after you get engaged.
1. Create a timetable
You should start thinking about your different dates sooner than later. This means your wedding date, when to send out invitations, when your bridal shower is going to be, etc. This is your basic outline for the next months or year that you have for planning. Give yourself enough time to prepare and to enjoy the process.
2. Pick a location and book the venue
Popular wedding locations get picked over and filled fast during popular wedding months. If you are planning a summer wedding, book the venue early.
3. Start dreaming about your style of wedding
Chances are, you have been planning your wedding day since you were little. Use websites like Pinterest and magazines for style inspiration. Make it your own! Play with colors, patterns, flowers, etc.
4. Set a budget
The budget is important. Sit down with family and figure out just how much everyone is contributing to the wedding. There are a number of wedding budget tools that you can use to help make sure you don’t go over your budget.
5. Make an initial guest list
When looking at this initial list, make sure your venue holds the number of people you want. You may have to whittle this list down if your venue won’t accommodate for the initial number of people you want. Remember, the more guests you have the more money you are going to spend.
6. Register for parties and for the wedding
Don’t worry about registering too early. You will most likely add to the list as you think of things you will need. Some people will look to buy gifts early too so this will allow the early birds to get you something early. This also allows you to be ready for any engagement parties, bridal showers, etc.
7. Choose your wedding party
The earlier you ask, the sooner you have more help! After knowing who is on your party, you can go look for dresses, talk about flowers, and dream about how the day is going to be together. Just keep everyone in the loop. This way, they know what their time commitment is, how much money is going into this, and important dates like bachelor and bachelorette parties.
8. Consider a consultant
If you and your fiancé are crazy busy and in need of help, consultants are the way to go. They can plan everything from the engagement to honeymoon or can help plan the basic outline for your wedding. This is a great way to make sure your day goes smoothly and without a hitch.
9. Dress shopping!
Dress shopping is one of the most exciting and stressful parts of being the bride. Make appointments and shops, look online and in magazines, dream about what you want to look like on your special day. Enjoy the search but do not get too overwhelmed. Trying on hundreds of dresses is not the way to go. Pick styles that you like and play with different ideas and styles. Find the dress of your dreams!
10. Insure your ring
Wearing a ring may be a new concept and it may take a while to get used to. The last thing you want to do is lose it and not be insured. Talk to your insurance agent about your options between adding it to a renter’s/homeowner’s or as a personal articles policy.
Congrats again on getting engaged! Enjoy this exciting time of life. Make this a day to remember. Enjoy the process and don’t worry about the little things. Ask for help when you need it. Have a beautiful life together!
