LOS ANGELES, CA – October 24, 2019 – Actress-Singer-Humanitarian Lou Barron stars in Tombstone Pillow, a short film directed by Daniel Lir and Bayou Bennet. The short poignantly calls attention to socioeconomic disparities in one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in the world – the slums of Manila Cemetery in the Philippines. The filmmakers’ primary purpose is driving social awareness to this issue. Through stark characterization and impactful imagery, this film reveals how, in one of the darkest corners of the world, compassion still conquers all.
“We aim to put a spotlight on situations where there is injustice. Our goal is to use our art to raise awareness and fight for people who don’t have a voice. We want to open our audiences’ eyes to things they haven’t seen before,” Bennet says.
The film handles the subject of extreme poverty with a heightened level of unexpected subtlety. The Manila Cemetery has been home to impoverished families since the 1950s, and Tombstone Pillow authentically illustrates how 6,000 people currently live in the shanty towns built atop graves and mausoleums. Baron plays Olivia, an heiress whose distant and unfeeling demeanor contrasts sharply with the kindness displayed by Maria, one of the children who lives in the slums. The juxtaposition of these two characters creates an incredibly moving effect.
Tombstone Pillow is also a breakthrough film because it was directed simultaneously by Lir and Bennet with Lir in the Philippines and Bennet in Los Angeles. Bennet used Facebook Video to direct remotely. The film is included in the list of films selected by the LA Shorts International Film Festival, and is also screening on March 23 at the opening night of the NYC International Film Festival at the Dolby Theatre. The film is Oscar-qualifying for LA Shorts, and is currently a finalist in the Asian Cinematography Awards where it will screen in Manila in the spring of 2020.
