Top plastic surgeon transforms terrible facial injuries into something wonderful

A new clinical study shows the immense benefit of adopting facelift techniques during facial injury repairs. The novel plastic surgery technique, performed over 11 years, dramatically improved patient satisfaction while enhancing their looks.

Dr. Srinjoy Saha, one of India’s top plastic surgeons, is developing an advanced facial injury repair technique that may change the future of facial reconstructions. Adapting the techniques of a facelift while performing facial injury repair is helping him achieve better results. “I aimed to lessen our patients’ sufferings, and transform terrible facial injuries into something wonderful. After advancing our plastic surgery techniques, I found that the obstacle is the way,” said Dr. Saha.

The new method called the ‘augmented facelift flap’ procedure could pave the way for improving the ultimate results of facial reconstruction. Changing the technique gives plastic surgeons better control during their surgery. It extends both the area of surgery and the depth of the incision. Fine dissection secures more tissues with smaller incisions, which hasten recovery. It becomes easier to dissect, elevate, and rotate the face flap by this technique while concealing scars. Deepening the incisions provides thicker flaps with a better blood supply. All these factors combine to improve the ultimate aesthetic results.

Dr. Saha performed a clinical study using the augmented facial flap on ten patients who suffered serious accidents or falls. Performed from 2009 to 2019, it enlisted patients with wounds on their cheeks and eyelids. He designed large flaps, mobilizing tissues from the cheek to the ear, and sometimes all the way to the neck. In the end, these steps ensured complete healing in eight out of ten patients. “Adopting aesthetic techniques in facial reconstruction improved our eventual results,” said Dr. Saha. “It was terrific to see no problems in 80 percent of major facial surgeries.”

Yet, such large and thick face flaps caused some trouble in two out of ten patients. One of them experienced some bits of dead skin around the wound. Within a few weeks, the dead skin healed on its own and needed no further treatments. Another patient experienced some sagging of her lower eyelids at first, which healed with a scar. Later, follow-up treatments with fractional lasers improved her scarring and normalized her appearance.

Six months after the procedure, almost everyone revealed tremendous improvements in their facial looks. To verify these claims, researchers analyzed the ultimate results on an elaborate questionnaire. All patients rated their improvements over original looks based on four distinct parameters. Results revealed significant improvements ranging from 50 to 90 percent, with a mean of 78. “The ultimate results were rather impressive,” said Dr. Saha. Further details are available in the research paper published in the Journal of Medical and Scientific Research.

Facial reconstruction is one of the most challenging plastic surgery procedures. Plastic surgeons have to tackle both the complex anatomy of the faces and high patient expectations. Patients are self-conscious of any scars or wounds on their faces. In such a tough scenario, the augmented facelift flap method appears to provide a decent solution. Imbibing facelift principles during facial injury repair offers tremendous improvements in ultimate results.

“Most accident survivors panic that an awful facial injury will disfigure their faces forever,” said Dr. Srinjoy Saha, rated to be one of India’s best plastic surgeons over the last decade. “But it may not be true. We improved our results by adopting the principles of a facelift during facial injury repair. While carrying out this clinical study, I really wanted to ensure that I was offering my best to the patients, and living up to their trust.”
