Bestselling author Nicole Edwards helps women find their authentic power

0

New book digs deep into the secrets and stories of 16 women of color forging leadership paths

Perfectionists, raise your hands! Nicole Edwards sees you. The speaker, facilitator, and founder of Edwards Authentic lists perfectionism as one of her core struggles. “In starting my own business, I felt like things needed to be perfect before unleashing them,” she says. “That can cause a lot of hesitation and doubt—needing perfection before launching new content or before launching a course. I’ve learned to just move with the process and take the next step. Really, just put one foot in front of the other. That’s a big lesson in starting and running your business.”

With a background in mental health as well as education, Nicole knows that adults learn best when they are actively engaged. That’s why she designs courses not just to deliver information but to deliver transformational experiences. When clients undergo these transformations, they are often able to step into what she calls their authentic power.

“Authentic power is when your personality, your soul, who you are at your core, aligns with what you’re doing in this life,” she explains. “You can get closer and closer to that, and with deep reflection and practice, you feel alive and vibrant.” She points out that it might not be just one thing that lights you up or that gives you purpose. “A lot of times we don’t move because it doesn’t feel right. As soon as you get aligned, it starts moving, it starts flowing. My advice would be to dig deep, read, listen to podcasts, pray, anything that helps you to learn more about yourself. Then find someone who helps you to continue the work, who helps you tap into your authentic power.”

Hear more from Nicole, including her experience parenting a child on the autism spectrum, in the inspiring new book International Women of Color Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with female entrepreneurs of color is a rich resource for women already embracing their strengths and capabilities as well as those looking for models and mentors to help guide their journeys to greatness.

Bestselling author Nazia Zainab Sheikh: “Empowerment means choosing what makes you happy.”

0

New book digs deep into the secrets and stories of 16 women of color forging leadership paths

Nazia Zainab Sheikh grew up in Pakistan, surrounded by and hearing about many empowered women. But it wasn’t until she became a mother that she understood what empowerment meant to her.

In her younger and what she calls more ‘naive’ years, she put empowered women down as professionals in prestigious fields, entrepreneurs, and women who stepped out into the corporate world. She herself went on to study law, following in the footsteps of her father and two older sisters. At the time ‘being successful meant that my profession has to superseed all else, it had to define me.’ The trouble began when Nazia found that incompatible with motherhood. “I wanted to be a hands on mother, stay by my girls in their primary years. It was a very confusing time for me. I was questioning myself, surprised by my inability to play the part I had chalked out for myself earlier.”

She credits her love for her daughters with helping her find the courage to be authentic and choose what felt right, which was to devote her time to her two girls in their primary years. “In choosing them, choosing what felt right within, without needing anyone else’s validation, I had chosen myself, and stepped into true empowerment.” Of course, she acknowledges that for another woman happiness and fulfilment might mean choosing to devote herself to her career, while others may not have the luxury to choose. The important point is “owning up to who you are.”

As Nazia’s girls grew and she contemplated returning to a high-pressure profession, she realized it wasn’t where she belonged. She had pursued functional medicine and holistic healing to overcome autoimmune disorders (and the medications she’d been prescribed to deal with her conditions) and through that exploration, she found her authentic calling as a theta healing practitioner.

“Theta” is the fascinating third state between consciousness and subconsciousness, and it is the ideal mindset for recognizing and healing limiting beliefs and thoughts—the programming we’ve all received throughout our childhood and from critical relationships in our lives. Theta sessions allow people to break free of limiting stories so they can move forward and achieve their goals. Nazia shares more about theta healing and her newest practice, encouraging women to live consciously, in the inspiring new book International Women of Color Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with female entrepreneurs of color is a rich resource for women already embracing their strengths and capabilities as well as those looking for models and mentors to help guide their journeys to greatness.

Bestselling author Naomi Alexander on making progress every day

0

New book digs deep into the secrets and stories of 16 women of color forging leadership paths

When Naomi Alexander was accepted into a Future Leaders program at her company and began managing fellow employees, she found her calling. “I want to help others. I want to be a leader and help others to grow and develop themselves,” she says. “That’s what brought me into coaching. It’s something that comes to me naturally.” Part of her ability to help others grow is having gone through significant personal growth in her own life.

Having experienced mental and physical abuse, she turned to journaling to help her separate that past from the goals she had for her future. “I began writing and journaling to say what I was feeling, because I felt like I wasn’t able to express myself. I was always being told to be silent. Silent,” Naomi says. “And you realize, even as you grow, that you won’t even speak up in meetings or when you’re talking to people. It creates a limit. You feel like you don’t have a voice and you shouldn’t be speaking. That’s how I grew up. But as I’ve continued on my journey, I know I do have a voice.”

In fact, journaling is the first thing she advises clients to do if they are struggling with negative situations or traumas from their past. “Try to start with journaling, meditation, and believing in yourself from the inside. It’s doing the work; it’s being committed to yourself. I used to put affirmations on my mirror in the bathroom encouraging myself: You can do this. You’re strong. You have what you need. God has given you what you need. It’s being able to really walk the walk and talk the talk. And it takes time. I don’t want to make it sound like it’s something easy. It takes daily commitment, and as you continue to do that, you will see that progress on a daily basis. You will be able to celebrate those as wins for your life.”

Affirmations are a useful tool for breaking away from our tendency to look to other people to approve of us, she explains. Now, Naomi helps the employees she manages find their own strengths and their own voices, and even embrace their weaknesses in order to turn them into strengths. “And then actually seeing it work after a period of time—seeing that employee being strong and being able to use their voice, that brings me great reward and joy.”

You can read more of Naomi’s story in the inspiring new book International Women of Color Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with female entrepreneurs of color is a rich resource for women already embracing their strengths and capabilities as well as those looking for models and mentors to help guide their journeys to greatness.

Bestselling author Kiki shares Black history every day

0

New book digs deep into the secrets and stories of 16 women of color forging leadership paths

When writer Kiki found that the URL BlackHistoryEveryday.com was available, she snapped it up. She’d thought for years about how Black History Month shortchanged Black people who made, and continue to make, history. What’s missing when you only focus on Black history one month out of the year? Now, with the URL in her possession, she decided she would post a different Black history fact every day.

She includes modern-day Black newsmakers as well—for example, the founders of Black Lives Matter. “A lot of people don’t know that the three founders of Black Lives Matter are all queer,” she says. “And I found that those were some of the voices that were being left out of Black history: the queer voices. The intersections were also being left out—you know, Black and Jewish, Black and Asian, Black and any sort of thing.”

Now that the site is established, she delights in followers sending along facts for her. “It’s really a labor of love to do this. I’m educating other people, but I’m also educating myself and my children in terms of just the real diversity of Black history. It is not limited to the United States, might I add. We are all over the world.” Learning of other Black people’s successes is what inspires her, especially when she is able to bring them to light. “It’s like, ‘Oh, my gosh, a Black woman was responsible for advancing GPS.’ That’s just amazing to me.”

Kiki is also a long-form writer whose essays have appeared in national outlets like the Huffington Post and on her own news site, KikiPosts. She shares more of her personal journey in the inspiring new book International Women of Color Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with female entrepreneurs of color is a rich resource for women already embracing their strengths and capabilities as well as those looking for models and mentors to help guide their journeys to greatness.

Pros & Cons of Buying A White Gold Engagement Ring

0

Finally found the right person and decided it’s time to tie the knot? While buying an engagement ring can be fun and exciting at first, it can soon become overwhelming if one isn’t knowledgeable in the jewelry industry.

Today, the topic of interest is white gold engagement rings. For years, white gold has been one of the most popular metal choices for wedding bands in both men and women.

Popularity in white gold engagement rings has skyrocketed since they offer many styles, can be the more affordable option, and are visually appealing. However, before pulling the trigger on a white gold engagement ring, there are some facts one may want to know.

Benefits of Opting For A White Gold Engagement Ring

The first pro everyone knows about is the timeless beauty white gold gives to the ring. White metals are the most popular options for diamond engagement rings. This is because they allow light to shine and reflect on the metal through diamonds on the engagement ring.

Since white gold jewelry looks good when combined with other metals, couples lean towards purchasing them; they love how neutral yet classy it looks.

Another reason why more couples have been sticking to white gold engagement rings is because it’s the next best white metal after platinum. Platinum engagement rings can sometimes cost up to 5x more expensive than an identical ring made out of white gold.

One of the reasons platinum is more expensive is because only 80 tons of platinum are mined per year, making it 30% more rare and gold. Meanwhile, 2,700 tons of gold are mined a year making it more accessible to consumers and less rare.

Also, when it comes to density, platinum is much purer and weighs more than gold. This is why more platinum is needed to craft rings, making it more expensive than if the exact ring were made out of white gold.

Since white gold engagement rings are more accessible to consumers because of their affordable prices, there is a larger variety of wedding and engagement rings available to choose from. White gold is the most popular metal choice for engagement rings, so there’s a wider selection of styles and designs than if one were looking for yellow or rose gold engagement rings. Many designers and dealers have thousands of different white gold engagement rings to choose from, there are no restrictions when it comes to white gold!

Reasons Why Some Dislike White Gold Engagement Rings

When comparing white metals like sterling silver, platinum, and white gold, it can be observed over time that white gold is the weakest of the three. By weakest, we are discussing the metal’s durability.

Since gold is such a soft metal, every time it bangs against a hard surface it loses a sliver of gold on the surface. Over time, white gold engagement rings tend to acquire deep scratches and bend out of place because of how soft the metal is.

On the other hand, platinum tends to harden over time. Unlike white gold, as years go by platinum creates a more durable patina finish that makes it very difficult to get scratched.

Another large red flag for many is that white gold doesn’t stay white forever. White gold is made from mixing gold and other alloys that give it that bright white finish. This means that by nature, white gold is actually yellow.

As a white gold engagement ring goes through years of wear, it starts getting a yellowish tint that can become evident as early as the first year after wear! The only way of eliminating this yellow tint from the ring is by getting it rhodium plated which brings the bright silver color back to white gold.

If someone plans to wear their white gold engagement ring 24/7, they will find themselves having to rhodium plate the ring every six to twelve months. This cost can easily begin to add up over the years and one might end up paying more for the overall cost of buying and maintaining a white gold ring than they would’ve if it were a platinum ring. Platinum never changes color over time so it’ll never need to get rhodium plated.

One last deal-breaker is that white gold is not hypoallergenic. Since white gold isn’t just pure gold, oftentimes someone can get an allergic reaction to the other alloys added to make white gold white.

Some metals used to give white gold its color are silver, palladium, nickel, and zinc. People with a sensitivity to these metals will easily get skin irritation that can make it impossible to enjoy wearing their engagement ring; truly unfortunate.

Platinum, being a hypoallergenic metal, is the perfect alternative for people allergic to the alloys mixed into white gold.

Bestselling author Kaumudi Goda gives local context to inclusive leadership and sustainable development

0

Her new book reveals the secrets and stories of 16 women of color forging leadership paths

Kaumudi Goda, or KG, is an award-winning speaker, executive coach, trainer, and facilitator. She’s also a dedicated proponent of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB)in all areas of business. As DEIB director and board member of the Data Visualization Society; Co-Founder of the Inclusive Leaders Institute; and Co-Chair of the KeyNote Women Speakers Directory, she puts that passion into action by helping her clients nurture and develop inclusive leaders and empowering, inclusive workplaces. KG’s work combines her training and experience to shine a light on key issues at the intersection of business, law and public policy, and people.

With both a law and business degree, KG is a successful woman by any measure, but she acknowledges that even she was unconsciously impacted by the cultural traditions in which she was raised. “I come from an Asian culture and a fairly traditional family. As much as I prided myself for being an independent, determined, strong woman, annoyingly, I had absorbed so much of the social conditioning from the environment I grew up in. It was several years before I realized that I had subconsciously de-prioritized my career against my husband’s,” she says. “Nobody had asked me to. And yet I had moved from the U.S. to Singapore, because my husband got a great job. I was absolutely shocked to realize I never questioned that when you have two careers in a family and one frequently takes a hit, there’s a pattern there. Why does that pattern exist? No one asked me to do it. The expectations that you have of yourself are heavily influenced by the culture around you without you even realizing it. You just absorb it.”

Understanding the insidious and pervasive impact of these biases and cultural mores, inspired KG’s current focus. Having served clients across the US, Europe, APAC and Oceania as a lawyer and a consultant, KG saw that organizational design, change management and leadership development programs cannot be one-size-fits-all.  “How racism shows up in Indonesia may be different from how it does in the U.S., Australia, or elsewhere in the world. So, you cannot have a unilateral change in policy or a single DEIB program/ workshop that makes absolute sense in all parts of the world. For any change to take root and be sustainable, it needs to have local context. I realized this was a really important need in the market—either solutions that are specifically created for the local market or taking what’s already available and customizing it for the local context. Sustainable change requires a long-term global vision with a local sensibility. And that’s how I became an entrepreneur. There was a need in the market, and I had those skills.”

KG shares more of her work on sustainable development and DEIB in the future of work in the inspiring new book International Women of Color Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with female entrepreneurs of color is a rich resource for women already embracing their strengths and capabilities as well as those looking for models and mentors to help guide their journeys to greatness.

Bestselling author June Kaewsith reminds women: “Comparison is the thief of joy!”

0

New book digs deep into the secrets and stories of 16 women of color forging leadership paths

June Kaewsith, also known as “Jumakae” on social media, is a wellness consultant and storytelling coach who encourages women to both heal themselves and support others simply by sharing their stories—because stories have the power to liberate us. “As we heal ourselves, we are healing generations before and after us,” she explains. “My business is supporting women of color with bossing up and becoming the very resources that we prayed for in our communities. We can put our energy toward dismantling these systems that are not working, or we can put the focus on creating what we want to see in the world.”

She helps women of color on healing journeys and she begins by advising them to first celebrate how far they have already come. “We often tell ourselves the story that we’re behind. Then we fall into this comparison trap. Comparison is the thief of joy!” she says. “Have you taken a moment to actually sit down and reflect on all that it is you have already overcome to get here? And if what you are carrying is ancestral, have you taken a moment to sit with your ancestors to share gratitude? Gratitude is the first entry point to abundance.”

And always remember, she says, “whatever challenges you are experiencing right now are going to make for a great story one day. I’m able to talk about adversity in my life today, such as getting fired from my job, as the catalyst for my business, Your Story Medicine, to be born. Five years ago, I was not able to tell that story when I was still in it. And as I actively shared my own healing journey with my audience, that’s when people became interested in connecting deeper with me. It wasn’t the fancy graphics, or the filters, or the copywriting that drew people in. It was me relating to others! So be compassionate with yourself, celebrate how far you’ve come, and share gratitude for the ancestors who have been walking this path with you all along.”

June shares more of her personal story in the inspiring new book International Women of Color Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with female entrepreneurs of color is a rich resource for women already embracing their strengths and capabilities as well as those looking for models and mentors to help guide their journeys to greatness.

Bestselling author Jeanie Chang says expressing emotions is the path to good mental health

0

New book digs deep into the secrets and stories of 16 women of color forging leadership paths

Jeanie Chang is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, International Speaker, AAPI Mental Health Expert and a DEI corporate consultant.  She is the founder of Your Change Provider, PLLC®, a therapeutic practice founded on her framework, Cultural Confidence™.  Born out of a slip of the tongue—during a presentation, Jeanie said “confidence” when she intended to say “competence”—cultural confidence™ is a framework that promotes “healthy emotionality through the powerful intersections of identity, mindfulness, resilience, and mental health.” Healthy emotionality is the core of Jeanie’s work.

Especially in Asian American households, children are taught that “saving face” and “showing face” are critically important. “It’s about making sure that no one knows something’s wrong,” Jeanie says. “But that’s not healthy, nor is it normal. Stress is a normal part of life. I do a lot of normalizing and de-stigmatizing in my work, especially with AAPIs.” But these beliefs and stigmas are common in many cultures and Jeanie is passionate about helping families and professionals navigate through that. “For healthy emotionality to promote good mental health, you need to be able to effectively express your emotions and be real.”

Jeanie came to her own realization of the power of cultural norms in her early 20s. Her goal since elementary school had been to be “the number-one Asian American journalist.” And she was well on her way when she had a strange experience. “I loved being a journalist when I was on the job, but when I would come home from work, I felt very empty. I remember thinking, ‘This doesn’t make sense,’ because my identity was so wrapped up in being the best journalist. That has a lot to do with my Asian upbringing. I’m a second-generation Korean American and everything was about achievements, doing well, looking good.” (Jeanie talks more about these stressors in her #1 bestselling memoir, A is for Authentic: Not for Anxieties or for Straight A’s.)

She realized was that she was going to burn out even though she was barely 24. “Something told me I wasn’t going to be able to sustain myself feeling this way.” And that’s what led her to focus on her own wellbeing and leave broadcast journalism.  Ultimately, following business school and marketing, she was led to the field of mental health. Jeanie considers herself a work in progress and advises others to view themselves compassionately that way as well. “People want identity to be final—’This is who I am—but identity is never final. It’s always evolving. You’re always changing. Hence the title of my practice: Your Change Provider, PLLC®. Change is always happening for growth. And that’s necessary!”

Jeanie shares more of her work on cultural confidence™ and intersectionalities in the inspiring new book International Women of Color Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with female entrepreneurs of color is a rich resource for women already embracing their strengths and capabilities as well as those looking for models and mentors to help guide their journeys to greatness.

Bestselling author Dr. AJ: “There’s always another door in front of you.”

0

New book digs deep into the secrets and stories of 16 women of color forging leadership paths

Aparajita Jeedigunta, otherwise known as Dr. AJ, says her name means “one who can never be defeated.” As the survivor of  two traumatic brain injuries , Dr. AJ is living up to her name. A consultant, strategist and coach in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, she is also an educator. She shows companies how to walk their inclusion  talk and she shows women how to step into their own power and use their voices even when they’ve been raised or conditioned to do otherwise.

“By the time little girls are in fifth grade what they hear shifts from, ‘You can be anybody you want to be!’ to ‘What is your likeability factor? What is your attractiveness factor?’ By the time our girls get to middle school their idea of leadership is submissiveness, not to assert their opinion.” Dr. AJ strives to help women reclaim their natural leadership qualities and to recognize that every avenue remains open to them. “Because of our conditioning, we don’t even realize, ‘Oh, there’s always been this other door out here!’ Nobody tells you about it but it’s always right here within six feet of you.”

It took literally dying from her second traumatic brain injury for Dr. AJ to realize that at the end of the day, any limits to her success were self-imposed. “But you don’t always have to go through trauma to recognize that you truly are limitless, she says. Dr. AJ shares more of her personal story and many tips for “getting out of your own way” in the inspiring new book International Women of Color Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with female entrepreneurs of color is a rich resource for women already embracing their strengths and capabilities as well as those looking for models and mentors to help guide their journeys to greatness.

When Varil was only 13, her mother passed, and a neighbor began looking out for her and even applied to college on her behalf. “That was the pivotal moment that turned my life around. Had she not done it I would not be the person who I am now,” says Dr. V, as she is also known. But alongside that good fortune is story after story of Varil almost dying. In fact, she calculated that she’d had 12 near-death experiences in the years between losing her mom and getting married at age 23, from getting caught in literal crossfire to a gas stove exploding in her face to falling through an attic floor to experiences that were even more traumatic.

“When I talk about that, it’s not for pity,” Dr. V says. “It’s to say that’s why I am here today. There was a plan all the time for me to be right here today. All the shame I’ve been through, the low self-esteem, the pain points: If I can do it and get through it, hey, I can help you get through.” Having faced obstacles, she frequently asks clients to think about two questions: First, what is that one perceived obstacle that you think that you cannot get rid of? And second, what would it look like if it disappeared?

She also guides clients through creating their personal vision plans, helping them discover their natural gifts and recover from pain in their past. “I’m a master at vision and design in bringing out that authentic self, that true person of you, that true identity. I help people to understand ‘Hey, this is your gift, this is what you’re able to do and this is what you do naturally.’”
