New book digs deep into the secrets and stories of 16 women of color forging leadership paths  

Dr. Tonya Blackmon is a fourth-generation business owner who is devoting her life to helping others start and scale businesses, both in the U.S. and abroad. “I love working with new starts. Our secondary focus is helping them get in place to apply for government grant funding. A lot of money the U.S. Government has set aside for government contracts is often untapped. We take our clients through the process from the beginning: starting the business, creating a business plan, helping with sales, finding potential funds, applying for bids/contracts, getting the funds, and then helping them manage the funds. Then we do the cycle all over again if they choose to continue to apply for grants.”

Put another way, Tonya says, “For over a decade, we have been really good at helping people get their business dreams and their desires out of their heads and out of their hearts and actually on paper. Then, we help them build and implement their very own money-grabbing strategy”

She’s also good at empathizing with women who are struggling with fears about entrepreneurship. “My biggest hurdle was gaining the confidence to even go ahead and get started in business,” Tonya says. “I’m going to be honest about this. My dilemma stemmed from having a steady paycheck and taking a risk on myself. Are you going to work corporate and get that big salary, or are you going to have your own business? I had to have the confidence to say, ‘Okay, I can do this.’ And I had to learn that it is okay to fail and to make mistakes and then get back up.”

And don’t try to do everything at once or figure everything out ahead of time. “One of the first things that I would tell a person that wants to start a business is to start where you are. Start exactly where you are; stop dreaming about it and actually start. It could be as simple as Googling ‘how to start a business in Nevada’ if you live in Nevada. There are so many free resources out there. The thing to do is just do it. Just start now and do not wait. Now is the time to get in the business game and do the work to build the life you have dreamed about.”

When Carmelle Jean-Francois was growing up in Queens, her parents didn’t have the luxury of “making time” for exercise. “Both my immigrant parents worked to pay a mortgage and put three children through private school,” she says. “They were focused on raising a family with good values. And being Black in the seventies—our parents were just naturally more focused on raising and protecting us as Black children in America than going out to exercise and stay fit. That was never a concern for them. And even if it was, it was a luxury they simply couldn’t afford.”

And for her parents’ generation, growing up in Haiti, daily life was just naturally more active. “We lose that here in America,” she says. “We have more access to public transportation, buses, and cars. There was more opportunity for them to get in daily exercise– to move their bodies..” As the founder and CEO of cFIT Coaching, which offers personal training, group coaching, and other fitness programs, Carmelle is on a mission to share her passion for fitness with all families and individuals. “Our bodies are meant to move, they are not meant to sit there,” she says. “So just move. Find what you like, because that’s what’s going to get you back to doing it again.” It could be playing with your grandchildren, walking outside, dancing, even taking steps in place while you watch your favorite TV series.

Though she grew up a tomboy who loved sports, it took a dramatic car accident to really shift Carmelle’s thinking about nutrition and fitness. Recuperating in the hospital having broken many bones, Carmelle was told, “Listen, don’t try to skimp out on your calories. Your body needs the calories to heal.” That helped her see food as medicine and appreciate her body for its strength and resilience. “I realized that the body is designed to heal itself, given the proper nutrition and movement,” she says. “The two go hand in hand. And it was that revelation that truly sparked an interest in fitness and propelled me to continue to challenge myself.”

When she launched cFIT Coaching she had no choice but to do it virtually because of COVID. “I was used to working with clients in person where I could physically illustrate an exercise. But now, like so many other professions that thrive on that person-to-person, human connection, I had to get my mind around dealing with clients virtually.”

Allison Lewis started a second Instagram page on the side but kept it on the down low and didn’t tell a soul. She saw social media influencers develop huge followings and turn their interests and experiences into a self-supporting business. You know, she thought, I bet I can do that too. A couple of months after she started posting photos and testing the best ways to get likes and followers, a friend randomly asked her, “Hey, do you have two Instagram pages?”

The cat was out of the bag and Allison’s business was under way. For a long time, though, she still considered it her “fun side hustle” and kept her full-time job. But she kept learning, developing her skills, figuring out how to create content, how to attract followers, and monetize her social media presence. After a lot of hard work building her foundation, she now devotes all her time to @Absolutely__Social on Instagram and her other social media outlets. She’s also written a book, The Business of Blogging and Social Media Influencing, and created a companion master class that goes even deeper in helping others learn to navigate social media as a business.

One thing she tells would-be influencers is to start with a platform they know and build gradually. “If you have a Facebook page, use that. Then maybe start a Facebook business page,” she says. “Don’t go full force into everything all at once. Start where you’re comfortable and work your way into new platforms, carrying over what you learned to the next one.”
