USA, January 4, 2021 If your coach doesn’t have a coach, how are they learning? Life coach Susan Elizabeth hired her own coach in 2004 and never looked back, even though she had already done plenty of personal development on her own. “I’ve been working with a life coach for almost 16 years now,” she says. “I know the power of coaching and I feel called to bring the message and bring the learning to others and make a bigger impact out in the world.”

Specifically, she sees an epidemic among women not believing they are enough, and not having the confidence to be themselves. “I think the root cause of so many health issues for women is a disconnection from themselves,” Susan explains. “I had to really learn to be myself and stop abandoning myself. I either had the disease to please earlier in my career, or I thought I had to “man up” later in my career because I wanted to be accepted. I wanted my ideas to be liked. And I had to stop that and come back home to myself and really learn to stand true in myself no matter what others say.”

Getting to that place was a journey for Susan, and it’s a journey she is committed to taking other women on. “Invest in yourself and recognize your self-worth,” she says. “Hiring a coach changed my life.” She also advises a practice of “exquisite self-care,” which she defines as balancing ambition with ease. Working hard requires recovery time in order to build resilience and wellness for the long haul. “I really want to show up and have my body do what I want it to do in this life. Because there is so much that I want to do.”

USA, January 4, 2021 Married young after an unexpected pregnancy, Beverly Zeimet quickly realized she did not fit within the narrow confines of her marriage or her religious Iowa farm country upbringing. After having three kids in three years, she felt she was at a breaking point. But divorce was intolerable for her strict Catholic family, so the only way out she could see was suicide.

Fortunately, she realized she needed to stay around to care for her kids and did not put her suicidal ideation into action. Instead, she says, she started yelling at God: “I want out of this dead-end marriage. I want out of Iowa.” And she heard a voice reply, “Okay. Start living for yourself and your kids.”

She wondered how she could possibly do that in a rural area without any specific skills. So she started making crafts, she started freelancing for local newspapers, she pumped gas. And every dime she earned, she put in her own bank account. Eventually, the gas station job led to a job selling auto parts, which led to a career. She got that divorce, moved out of Iowa, and, as she sees it, reclaimed her identity.

“We all lose pieces of our identity, and we want to be liked and accepted. Sometimes we lose ourselves by being what we think other people want us to be,” she says. “Instead, you need to start looking at who you really are.” That can be very uncomfortable for a lot of us, Beverly acknowledges, but it is the only way to move forward. “When you start looking at the different traumas and the emotional things, all the baggage: It does not serve a purpose. You cannot change what’s behind, you can only change what’s in front of you.”

USA, January 4, 2021 Christine Harper spent decades working for blue-chip companies, but when she was forced into “early retirement” she had no interest in retiring. “I was not ready to sit down and do nothing! I still had something to contribute.” She jumped into her local Toastmasters group, started learning about coaching and leadership development, and became a certified coach. She had found her niche.

Now she helps other women find theirs—but the key to success, Christine has learned, comes from a focus on your own wellness, both physical and mental. Even though she suffered breast cancer that required a mastectomy, a stroke that required lengthy rehab, a divorce that left her a single parent, and a high-stress career, she doesn’t point to any of those circumstances as her biggest obstacle in becoming an entrepreneur. “The biggest hurdle,” she admits, “has been realizing that I’m worth the investment. And that’s what I’ve had to do time and time again.”

And because she’s done that, she knows how to help others do it too. “Too many of us don’t want to ask for help,” she says. But sometimes that’s the only way to get clarity, to open our eyes to our own worth. “We have to take time to ask for help. As a coach, I try to help people understand some of the things that I’ve learned over the years. There are some basic rules you can use to manage the situations you find yourself in.”
