American shines bright in a promising future because of those who endured and stood the test of time

In the book, Divine Providence, Celebrating Humanity, Friedman shares the struggle she, then three siblings, and her mother faced to avoid being captured and sent to a concentration camp during World War II. The German/French Underground miraculously kept her father apprised of their whereabouts while they were separated, but their happy reunion was quickly dampened by the dire conditions they faced.

This well-crafted memoir shares the extreme difficulty of surviving during this dark time in world history. Throughout the story, the author includes her gratitude to the people in the countries that helped her and others in her predicament. When her family received a CARE package after the war on Christmas Eve from America, young Erika asked, “What is America?” Then she declared ”One day we’ll go to America where people care and help others too.“ Her family laughed at her bold statement, but through divine providence, she accomplished that very goal.

From the young girl with a look of determination to the mature woman with an unmistakable aura of peace, the book’s cover is a marvelous encapsulation of the author’s life. She was raised as a Christian while also treasuring her Jewish roots, and the symbols between the two pictures reflect not only her faith but the persecution she endured. The cross and ichthys, well-known symbols for Christianity, are connected to the symbol used to identify Jews persecuted during the Holocaust—the yellow Star of David with the word Jude (German for Jew) in the center. Finally, the bright light shining through the towering trees echoes the author’s descriptions of the brilliant light that would accompany supernatural encounters she experienced throughout her life.

What I liked most about this book was the author’s graceful nature; it passed through her writing, off the pages, and right into the heart of the reader. During times when food was difficult to come by, Erika went shopping and located a butcher shop and purchased one pound of meat with the only money she had. There was not enough meat for the family, and their father needed his strength as the head of the family, so her mother cooked the meat for him. She allowed Erika to be present while her father ate it, but her siblings had to stay in the living room to prevent them from seeing him eat. There were many emotions she could have felt—envy, anger, desperation—but she watched him eat with thankfulness that she could help to provide for her family. It did not feel like she was suppressing any resentment or looking for recognition. Her service to her family was enough. She inspired me with her humility.

This book is part history lesson, part memoir, and all faith. It is not necessary for the reader to have the same faith as the author. She is not proselytizing; she is merely sharing what life was like for her during this dreadful time. History lovers would enjoy this book, but I also recommend it to those who appreciate narratives about miraculous survival against all odds. This story is an important reminder of a time that should not be forgotten or refuted. There are, however, accounts of trauma and abuse. These scenes, while sometimes hard to read, are made much more palatable by the love and the grace in the author’s presentation. This book is a gift to humanity and can become a classic. I recommend it to anyone who likes books about World War II.

The Sweden-based startup pioneering industrial origami – a cutting edge sheet metal shaping procedure using origami folding techniques, laser cutting and industrial robotics – announces that their demonstrator prototype STILRIDE SUS1 is ready for presentation.

Tue Beijer is an industrial designer, and after more than 20 years in the vehicle business he is now the founder of STILRIDE. Together with managing director and co-founder Jonas Nyvang and their team in Sweden, they want to build the most attractive and sustainable electric scooter in the world.

 

“We strongly believe in the electrification of personal mobility and see the need for a new breed of mid-range commuting vehicle made in harmony with nature”, says founder Tue Beijer.

 

The mission is to create clean energy powered personal mobility devices through a flexible and sustainable production technology called industrial origami. STILRIDE wants to challenge the traditional view of manufacturing through using robotic industrial origami to fold structures from a flat sheet of metal true to the material’s characteristics and geometric nature. A safe, desirable and sustainable production and transportation platform.

 

The company started as a research project and it has now taken the initial design of the STILRIDE electric scooter motorbike into a finished concept. In the process the project has demonstrated the method of designing and constructing using steel sheets as the raw material through industrial origami using its proprietary technology called LIGHT.FOLD. Years in the making and originally no more than a novel mind-bending concept, the STILRIDE manufacturing platform is now being simulated by the the R&D company Robotdalen, making “produced here” not only viable, but to all intents a no-brainer for a wide range of products.

 

Several well-established Swedish technology and industrial players, eager to get in on the game-changing production technology, are partners in the project. These integral partnerships have resulted in their first product: STILRIDE SUS1 with innovative tech features, sustainable and efficient batteries and a class leading electronic engine, conceptualized to take happy commuters from point A to point B in harmony with nature.

 

The STILRIDE research project is lead by founders Jonas Nyvang and Tue Beijer. A tight collaboration between them, the product development company Semcon, the steel engineering workshop Brantheim, the research institute RISE IVF as well as the global stainless steel manufacturer Outokumpu has been the foundation of the success. The STILRIDE project is part of the research program Metalliska material coordinated by Jernkontoret and funded by The Swedish Innovation Agency: Vinnova.

 

The idea for STILRIDE originates from 1993 when Tue Beijer designed his first electric scooter. Tue Beijer has since worked for the legendary Giotto Bizzarrini, the father of the 250 GTO and the Lamborghini V12 engine, BMW motorcycles, Husqvarna and has his spare time designed a lightweight sports car from scratch.

FLOWVEMBER: MENSTRUAL PRODUCTS FOR PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS

resisterhoodLA’s 4th annual Flowvember event educates about period poverty

LOS ANGELES, CA – Period products are one of the most requested but least donated items for people experiencing homelessness. resisterhoodLA is hosting its 4th annual Flowvember Virtual Variety Show on Sunday, November 15th from 12:00pm – 2:00pm. Due to the ongoing pandemic, this year’s event will be streaming online, accompanied by a no-contact drive-thru hygiene kit build where 100 pre-selected volunteers will build 2500+ hygiene & menstrual kits for our unhoused neighbors. This year’s kits will be provided to NoHo Home Alliance, LA Community Action Network, and distributed to LA Community Fridges all over Los Angeles.

Admission to the Flowvember Variety Show is pay-what-you-can! This family-friendly streaming event is open to all ages, all genders. The online show will be hosted by Provvidenza Catalano (they/them), a fat, queer, genderful multidisciplinary artist and organizer living in Los Angeles. Provvidenza’s work centers on the intersections of queerness, gender, fat bodies, chronic illness and the search for emotional fullness. Our Virtual Show will feature performances by Cuntry Boi and Greasy Bouffant of Them Fatale Drag Kings, Brad Milison (winner of Learn the Words, Bitch!), MOTH Storyteller Molly Prather, and more! Online attendees will hear from grassroots organizers about how we can advocate for our neighbors experiencing homelessness from SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition, Polo’s Pantry, Clare Matrix, WaterDropLA and Homeymade Meals. Our hygiene kits contain: hand sanitizer, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, shaving supplies, deodorant, vaseline, a pair of socks, menstrual products, and a note of encouragement written by neighbors from all over the country.

A hygiene kit is a 3-in-1 tool. A hygiene kit contains basic hygiene items that provide our neighbors experiencing homelessness with tools to maintain their health and sense of dignity. Our non-profit partners use hygiene kits as a first step in their outreach & relationship-building. Assembling hygiene kits is an impactful hands-on volunteer opportunity to build empathy and advocacy within our housed community.

 

In 2019, Flowvember collected 20,000+ period products and 150 volunteers came together to make hygiene kits for SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition, a neighborhood-level movement responding to homelessness in a proactive, compassionate, and effective way. In 2018, hygiene kits were built for Midnight Mission’s Women’s Program and Covenant House California. In 2017, for My Friends Place.
