Awarding-winning youth boxer, Joseph “JoJo” Awinongya, Jr. , has been presented with a Junior Athletic Achievement Award by Illinois Secretary of State, Jesse White. The award was bestowed on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018 as part of the state’s African-American Heritage Month Celebrations.

The 10-year-old Awinongya is a standout athlete in the world of youth boxing and is ranked No. 1 in the nation. He won the Silver Gloves National Championship in 2017 and 2018. He received the U.S.A. Boxing Nationals title in 2017 and was the U.S.A. Boxing Junior Olympics winner in 2017. In recognition of his many achievements, the International Boxing Federation awarded the youngster a congratulatory belt to honor his focus and determination within the sport.

Awinongya also has a starring role in the newly released documentary, “Fight in America – I Am Your Keeper,” that’s available on Amazon. Proceeds from the film will go toward his expenses as Awinongya continues to compete in other championships. The young boxer’s father is a well-known professional boxer, trainer and coach who at one time worked with boxing promoter, Don King.

When the elder Awinongya undertook a media tour, his son accompanied him. Directed by Valerie Ayertey, “Fight in America” follows the father-son boxers on the tour and the 2018 film highlights the junior Awinongya, along with the advice he received from professionals across the nation.
