It’s a bird, it’s a plane! No, it’s Hookslide A cappella! Do you remember the Superfriends cartoon? This vocal group certainly does. Based in San Francisco, CA, the members of Hookslide have put together an original song and video worthy of a place in the Hall of Justice. The video features the California based A cappella group in capes and masks singing and beatboxing in boxes with Superman, Wonder Woman, Aqua Man, the Wonder Twins and all the greats battling the forces of evil.
The idea came to group founder Bud Anderson in 2007. “When I was a kid, I always loved the Superfriends. I thought it was cool that there were a bunch of superheros from different places and different backgrounds that came together and worked as a team. I think it might’ve been my first introduction to the power of diversity and it really helped shape my view of how people could work together.”
Hookslide recorded the song in the Fall of 2007 for their second album, but then recently had the idea to translate the song into video form. “It seemed like a great time to do something like this. Most of us have kids now and it seemed like a fun way to connect with them, call out an amazing cartoon and have some fun as a group. We also do fundraisers for schools so we thought this would be a fun way to connect with kids in that way as well.” said Mayank Thanawala, tenor.
Hookslide has been singing together for 19 years as the same four members and has performed over 500 shows nationally. The members all work in the tech industry and still rehearse often and write original music. “Maybe the next one will be about the electric company, we’ll see.” said Anderson.
We can only hope that these four Superfriends keep singing together for years to come.
