Bestselling author Dai Smith on being the model she needed

0

With no “mompreneurs” out there to show her how they did it, Dai decided she’d be that girl for others

In college, Dai Smith used to organize her friends’ dorm rooms. She even started helping professors organize their offices! She was great at it, and she knew others hated doing it. But it wasn’t until she found that professional organizers got paid for their service that she understood it could be a career choice.

But she tucked that information away, got her college degree, entered Corporate America, and started a family. And still, she organized and even got certified. Trying to balance her own life—children, a job that required travel, a husband who worked long hours—was good practice. Finally she started taking on paying clients, building her business, while still keeping her corporate job. Being a “solopreneur” is a challenge but Dai says “I hold on to my ultimate goals, how my possibilities are endless.”

And now, in addition to helping clients organize their homes, she is helping entrepreneurs—including moms starting side hustles like she was—because she never found that person who could help her. “When I started, I was searching for somebody that I knew, or somebody who knew somebody, who was a mom, a wife, a professional, an entrepreneur who could give me some guidance. And there were not many people. So I said, “I’m going to be the one. I’ll be the one to figure it out, because I’m the organizer, I’m the systems nerd, I’m that girl. I’m going to figure it out and I will help others figure it out because I think there are many moms who have these goals, but they may put them to the side because they have a family.”

But Dai gives full credit to the women who have gone before. “I am standing on great shoulders. When I think about my ancestors, when I think about even my mom, how hard she and my grandmother worked, how many sacrifices they’ve had to make to help me to be where I am today.” And they were models for accomplishing what they set out to do. Now Dai wants to be that model for young people. “Possibly some little girl, some little boy, will see me doing these things and think, ‘I can do that, too.’ Whether that’s my children or my friends’ kids or whoever. I’m thinking about legacy, and that inspires me.”

Dai Smith’s story is featured in the new book Moms Who Boss Up Post-Pandemic, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with moms who are side hustlers and multitaskers, who faced the uncertainties of the Covid pandemic—and other obstacles—by embracing their strengths and finding their authentic paths. They have so much to share and to teach and while every story is unique, the thread of perseverance and creativity is common to all.

Holy Ramen announces new single ‘Sanctuary’

0

Written in the darkness of the pandemic lockdown, Holy Ramen’s latest single ‘Sanctuary’ offers a place for all those seeking solace during turbulent times. Following the success of her debut album in 2020, Holy Ramen returns with ‘Sanctuary,’ the lead single from her upcoming EP. ‘Sanctuary’ will be available on all platforms from the 19th November 2021.

The lockdown made me give up on being social. The world looked bleak, and I had that urge to run into the wilderness and be alone,” explains Toronto artist, Holy Ramen. Through expressive storytelling, ‘Sanctuary’ offers a relatable narrative of the desire to escape reality and its hardships.  Emotive and dreamy, Holy Ramen’s striking vocals sweep over the haze of electric guitar and the reassurance of the driving drums. Stepping away from her familiar territory of hiphop, ‘Sanctuary’ invites rock influences into her soundscape.

Beneath the gritty guitar solo and hypnotic beat, Holy Ramen’s melodic vocal line is the perfect blend of infectious and eerie. There’s a haunting quality to the track, that speaks of a dystopian universe, mirroring the bleakness of the lyrical content. Verse two welcomes spoken word from Holy Ramen, a wave of calmness in the easy flow, as if the world passes by in slow motion. It’s a sombre affair, but in the best possible way, incorporating elements of the past and present, while looking far into the future.

Bestselling author Liza Millan on succeeding after losing it all

0

First she invested in healing herself, then she built the business of her dreams—while also raising her son as a single mom.

As an event planner for 20 years, Liza Millan is accustomed to looking ahead, foreseeing all eventualities, and creating contingency plans. But she could never have foreseen that she would return from a business trip in 2015 to find that her business partner (and ex-husband) had wiped out all the money her business had earned—more than $1 million. “I was devastated. All the money that I was saving for the house that I was planning to purchase was gone. The money for my son’s college tuition had vanished,” she says. She fell into a depression that lasted for years.

Fortunately, she got help from therapists and enrolled in personal-development programs that taught her how to love and trust herself so that she could love and trust others again. With her confidence regained, she had her day in court against her ex-husband and then, in September 2019, she launched her new event company, Masterpiece. “This business is my pride and joy because I started it on my own,” she says.

Flash back to early in her career, when she was 22 years old and a new mom. For the first years of her son’s life she managed to find jobs that allowed her to work at home so she could stay with him. But it wasn’t easy. “I ended up getting a divorce when I was 26 years old, so I was a single mom who had to go through the struggles of raising a son plus everything that has to do with the divorce. One of the things that kept me strong was the thought that my son is still with me, and that I’ve always had the strength to follow my dreams no matter what. I think one thing that most entrepreneurs have is resiliency. We don’t easily give up. We go after our goals despite the odds.”

And that’s her message to other women who might be in her position. “Don’t give up,” she says. “If something happens, whether it’s a failure or a success, continue working, do your best. Everything offers a lesson that will make you stronger in the end.” After all, she is living proof. “Launching Masterpiece is a big win for me, because after going through an almost insurmountable difficulty, I was able to bounce back and was given the chance to start over again.” Reach out to Liza through her website, MasterpieceLM.com or email her at liza@masterpieceLM.com.  She’s on Facebook or Instagram @iamlizamillan.

You can also read more about Liza’s journey in the inspiring new book Moms Who Boss Up Post-Pandemic, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” The book collects 16 interviews with moms who are side hustlers and multitaskers, who faced the uncertainties of the Covid pandemic—and other obstacles—by embracing their strengths and finding their authentic paths. Bestselling author Loretta Williams can help anyone reach their financial goals

0

Surviving through tough times gives her the credibility to tell others: You can do it. Just start today.

Helping people reach their financial goals was not something Loretta Williams ever thought she’d do as a career. Numbers were not her thing! She intended to be an English teacher. But in college, she had to make the numbers work because she was paying cash for that education. Even working three jobs wasn’t always enough and she had to stop attending classes at one point and focus on work. Her son was born while she was out of school and Loretta says she could have been among the many college students who drop out and never go back because life happens.

“But one day I told my infant son that I would get my master’s degree before he went to first grade. That was my promise to him. I said, ‘I cannot encourage my son to go to school to get his master’s degree—or any degree—if I have not done that myself.’ He’s a newborn, I’m looking at him, making this promise. He doesn’t even know what I’m saying! But I’m like, ‘When he goes to first grade, I will have my master’s degree.’” And she did. Transferring from community college to Colorado Technical University, she earned her degree in business administration with a concentration in management and entrepreneurship. She’d had entrepreneurial models in her life: Her great-grandfather started a BBQ restaurant, Lee’s Texas-Style Barbecue, that had become well known in Detroit; she saw her mother working hard at that restaurant and then renovating the first floor of their house to launch a daycare business. She knew the benefits of working for herself but it wasn’t until she took those business and finance classes that she came to understand how she would help people.

“I had the education and the certifications and I thought about how I could contribute, how could I use what I’d learned through life and education to help my community,” she says. “And I remembered the moms I came in contact with when I was making $18,000 or less a year. And I realized, ‘Okay, I can help people with my organizational skills.’ I love finances, I love to save, I love to budget. So that’s what I started actively working toward. Basically, we help individuals reach their financial goals. We provide them a step-by-step plan, whether your goal is taking two vacations a year, buying a car, or increasing your credit score.”

Read much more of Loretta’s story, including how she stays focused and her biggest financial tip, in the inspiring new book Moms Who Boss Up Post-Pandemic, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” The book collects 16 interviews with moms who are side hustlers and multitaskers, who faced the uncertainties of the Covid pandemic—and other obstacles—by embracing their strengths and finding their authentic paths. How bestselling author MiShawn Williams lost a job and gained a life she loves

0

An interest in wine became a weekend side hustle and then a full-time career with rewards beyond just financial

With a background in advertising and commercial production, MiShawn Williams was used to being in the center of creative endeavors, socializing with other creatives, getting to know clients in social situations—and as she attended many professional events, she began to develop an interest in wine. That interest led to taking classes and eventually joining a wine business and offering in-home (or online) tastings for a wide variety of clients. Though this began as a side hustle, when MiShawn lost her job during the 2008 downturn she started to think seriously about making it her full-time gig.

Not only has this decision literally paid off (she earned an incentive trip to France), it has also prompted MiShawn’s personal growth in ways she didn’t expect, from leadership to marketing to business development. “One of the earliest things I discovered in my business, as someone stepping into leadership or mentorship, is that people learn and thrive in different ways,” she says. “Not everyone is going to step into something the way that you are or the way you think it should be done. I wanted to start my own business and do my own decision-making and that’s what other people want. That’s how people are going to step into their own leadership and power—by expressing it in their own specific way.”

For other women who have been let go from a job—or who simply want to start calling their own shots—MiShawn suggests paying attention to what you love. And if “love” is too dramatic for you, she says, just pay attention to what you like! “Then expose yourself to more opportunities to have that ‘like’ around you.” Look online, find a group, do some research, and then figure out how that like (or love) might become a career. You can even start with figuring out how it could be a contribution to your community.

Once you do that, set some goals and share them. “There is magic in goals,” says MiShawn. “Whether you’re hitting them or not, goals give you the direction to go in. They give you your map. They help you fulfill what’s important to you.”

You can hear much more of MiShawn Williams’s story in the inspiring new book Moms Who Boss Up Post-Pandemic, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” The book collects 16 interviews with moms who are side hustlers and multitaskers, who faced the uncertainties of the Covid pandemic—and other obstacles—by embracing their strengths and finding their authentic paths. Bestselling author Olga Kaminer learned to break out of her destructive behavior patterns

0

In her coaching practice, she helps others become strong and self-sufficient

“Once I overcame everything that was going on in my life, I decided that I wanted to help women to do the same,” says coach Olga Kaminer. “I can see women around me struggling in their marriages, struggling in their lives. And I don’t want them to stay like that. I want them to become self-sufficient and happy regardless of the circumstances they are in.” What Olga shares with clients about her own life is her realization that although she recovered from a devastating divorce from her first husband, she did nothing to address her own behaviors. So when she met and married her second husband, that marriage also deteriorated. And she blamed him.

What shifted her perception is that, at the time, she had begun to do some self-development work and was encouraged to stop viewing herself as a victim. One of her teachers said, “You are responsible for everything that is happening in your life. Take ownership.” Olga heard the message, but she needed time to truly absorb it. “It took me a few days to digest that, because for 35 years I was a victim. I was blaming everything on everybody. And now I had to take ownership of everything that had happened,” she explains. “It was a very hard transition. But once you know that you are the creator of your life—not your spouse, not your friends, not your manager at work—once you realize that, you are going to reach mountains. You will be unstoppable.”

In fact, she was able to repair that second marriage and she is still with her husband today. You can read much more of Olga’s story in the inspiring new book Moms Who Boss Up Post-Pandemic, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” The book collects 16 interviews with moms who are side hustlers and multitaskers, who faced the uncertainties of the Covid pandemic—and other obstacles—by embracing their strengths and finding their authentic paths. They have so much to share and to teach, and while every story is unique, there is creativity and perseverance at the core of each one.

How bestselling author Shalonda “Shay” Anderson stopped using her trauma as an excuse

0

After doing the hard work of healing herself, she helps others escape the trap of victimhood and choose a better life.

Shalonda “Shay” Anderson has gone through some things. After childhood trauma and devastating adulthood losses and betrayals, she ended up angry, hurt, and “in a really dark space.” Feeling as if she’d lost everything and was on the verge of losing herself, she surrendered to God. And through a process of prayer, fasting, journaling, she healed and hit upon the idea of rebirth. “That word just kept sticking out: rebirth,” she says. “Where I am right now is a rebirth. And so I just stuck with it.”

That led to her truly addressing the feelings and experiences she had kept bottled up inside for so long and freed her to become the positive entrepreneur and inspiration to others that she now understands she was destined to be. Her clothing company is named for the recovery she experienced: Rebirth Custom Brand, what she refers to as “an empowerment brand.”

“Sometimes we need that confidence, the little statements on our shirts. So it’s almost like you put your shirt on and you feel that boost. You’re wearing your confidence.” And while she sees her brand as empowering and inspirational, she emphasizes that the motivation has to come from within. “No matter what you’ve been through, if you make a choice to want to get over it, you can get over it. But it has to be a choice. It has to be something you want to do. Either you’re going to be a victim or you’re not.”

Shay has the experience to back up her words. You can read more of her story in the inspiring new book Moms Who Boss Up Post-Pandemic, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” The book collects 16 interviews with moms who are side hustlers and multitaskers, who faced the uncertainties of the Covid pandemic—and other obstacles—by embracing their strengths and finding their authentic paths. Make the entrepreneurial leap now, says bestselling author Steffany Powell

0

Don’t waste time waiting for someone to give you permission.

Steffany Powell spent 15 years working in Corporate America, and if you ask her what inspires her now, she’ll tell you it’s knowing she never has to go back. “I just don’t want to do it. It’s not built for human beings. We’re expected to work these arbitrary hours, but most people get the bulk of their work done in like three days. I remember I would go to my job really early in the morning to work when it was quiet and then I would leave at 3 p.m. One day they pulled me aside and said, ‘The senior manager doesn’t leave until 5:30, so you should stay until 6:00.’ And I’m like, ‘But I come in early.’ They said, ‘We don’t care. It’s all about optics.’ So I was working 12-hour days just for optics. It’s ridiculous.”

Just as she got out of her second marriage, where she supported the whole family and built no no savings for retirement, Steffany got laid off. She’d built a career on writing, having found this skill and passion after staying home to raise her kids and then going back to school for journalism and creative writing. Years later she added a master’s degree in digital media, all of which made her a very marketable employee, especially in the tech space.

But instead of getting another six-figure job (and risking another layoff), she took the biggest gamble of her life: “I rolled the dice on my own talent and my own skill to potentially make even more than that.” It took soul-searching (and therapy) to find the confidence to move forward, but she actually wishes she had done it sooner. “You don’t need to wait for permission,” she says. “And maybe you don’t completely believe in yourself, but that’s okay. As I started getting success my confidence grew and I realized I should have done this a long time ago.” Now her digital media company, Fortuna Creative, is continuing to grow and she is employing people in a non-hierarchical work environment where everyone contributes on their own terms.

There’s much more of her story and her advice for aspiring entrepreneurs in the inspiring new book Moms Who Boss Up Post-Pandemic, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” The book collects 16 interviews with moms who are side hustlers and multitaskers, who faced the uncertainties of the Covid pandemic—and other obstacles—by embracing their strengths and finding their authentic paths. Bestselling author Teri Riley teaches women to show up feeling confident and amazing

0

As a certified image consultant, she is on a mission to help women discover their unique, personal style.

Back in the day, Teri Riley’s girlfriends relied on her advice at the mall as they tried to put outfits together. “I really never thought of it as a gift or something special,” Teri says. “It’s just something that I naturally did.” Now she has taken that natural gift, honed it with training as an image consultant, and combined it with her own experience of being bullied to create a business dedicated to empowering women through fashion. There is nothing she likes better than putting together the perfect outfit for someone—something they’d never think to try. “They look in the mirror and they’re just full of joy,” she says, “and able to see themselves in a different way.”

To get to where she is today, Teri had to learn to see herself in a different way too. “The biggest hurdle for me was mindset,” she explains, remembering the bullying she endured. “You hear those words over and over in your mind that you can’t do it—and you believe it. And it’s all a lie. It’s not who God created me to be. And once you actually discover who you are and who you were created to be—we’re all created with a purpose. We just may not have discovered it. I discovered that I’m unique, there’s only one Teri, and I have a purpose that I need to fulfill. There are women that only I can reach, and they are waiting on me.”

In addition to guiding women’s wardrobe choices, Teri advises them to find their purpose by being still. Listen to what comes up for you, what leads you to your path. And when you hear it, follow it. “Very often we don’t listen to what our heart is calling us to do because we’re afraid. We put it to the side or we come up with reasons why it won’t work. Just say yes! Say yes.”

Find Teri and see some of her styles at her website: empoweredstyles.com or email her at teri@empoweredstyles.com. On Instagram and Facebook, she is @StylishlyTeri. And you can read much more of her story in the inspiring new book Moms Who Boss Up Post-Pandemic, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” The book collects 16 interviews with moms who are side hustlers and multitaskers, who faced the uncertainties of the Covid pandemic—and other obstacles—by embracing their strengths and finding their authentic paths. Bestselling author Angela Bell wants women to stop waiting for permission to go after their goals

0

Get rid of the mom guilt and set an example for your kids by using your voice and achieving your dreams.

Angela Bell went through her childhood knowing she was going to be a lawyer. But the job wasn’t exactly what she expected. “I’ve always believed that there should be justice and there should be a just society. Ever since I was a little kid, I always sought to make things fair and equal for people, and something about the legal profession appealed to that side of me. I wanted to make it okay for everybody on all sides,” she says. But although she worked for a great law firm and enjoyed the experience, she could see that the ways she wanted to impact people couldn’t really be done in a courtroom.

So her next move was to go into business with her dad—another lifelong dream—which was enormously successful until he suddenly passed away in a car accident. Angela had given birth to her twins not even two years earlier, and as she and her family tried to keep the business on track they began to struggle. Ultimately the business failed. “Over time I can see it as a blessing in disguise—not losing my dad, obviously—but losing the business,” she says. “I wasn’t happy anymore. After my dad was gone, it wasn’t my dream anymore. And I was working so hard and these long hours, coming home, making dinner, putting my kids to bed, going back to the office after that so that I could work more, getting three, four hours sleep a night, literally just working myself death.”

One thing losing her dad and her business taught her was that she could survive tragedy and pick herself back up. And if she could do it, other people could do it. And going back to her childhood ideas of helping others, Angela pivoted to coaching—specifically coaching women with big dreams who were afraid to let themselves go for those goals, or who felt it was somehow inappropriate if they were moms. “My kids came early and everybody kind of looked at me like I was just supposed to stay home all of a sudden,” she recounts. “And I’d always been an ambitious person. I loved big goals. But anytime I’d say, ‘I’m going back to work,’ I would get a response like ‘Really? Don’t you think you should be with your kids?’ And something about that really bothered me. It just crawled under my skin. Why do people think that becoming a mom suddenly means that women can’t do other things? Or that we don’t want to do other things, or that we don’t still need to do other things to feel fulfilled?”

Now she helps women reclaim their voices and give themselves permission to go after their goals without feeling bad about it. Not just for the sake of the women themselves but because, she says, society loses when these women exit the workforce. “They are brilliant, creative, strong, problem-solvers. They’re compassionate, they’re so many things. And when we put them in a box and we say, ‘This is where you have to stay now. Feel really bad if you try to venture outside that box,’ the whole world misses out. I want to do something about that.”

Read more about how Angela helps moms get clear on their purpose while leaving mom guilt behind in the inspiring new book Moms Who Boss Up Post-Pandemic, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” The book collects 16 interviews with moms who are side hustlers and multitaskers, who faced the uncertainties of the Covid pandemic—and other obstacles—by embracing their strengths and finding their authentic paths. They have so much to share and to teach, and while every story is unique, there is creativity and perseverance at the core of each one.
