Dr. Artika Tyner Releases New Black Children’s Book to Inspire and Affirm

Strange Hotels Joins Project Love Apparel’s FLY Movement

Q. What is life like today for Strange Hotels?

We’re feeling really grateful fight now. The pandemic was a slog for everyone and Musicians are certainly no exception. Somehow after fighting through that insane year and a half we have found ourselves with 3 weekly residencies in LA. Wednesday’s at Harvelles in Santa Monica, Fridays at Harvard and Stone and Sundays at Good Times at Davey Wayne’s in Hollywood. It’s been an adjustment to be thrust right back out there but it’s been really wonderful to see everyone and play a bit of music in some lovey dark bars. We somehow still find time in between shows to write and record new music. But yeah basically we are stepping back, taking a breath, actually able to plan things a couple months in advance for the first time in a while.

Q. Who were some of your musical influences growing up?

This is a great question for us because we grew up discovering music together so our answers are pretty similar.

In high school, we were pretty basic indie dudes, so we were always bumping The Strokes, LCD, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT, Kid Cudi etc… Honorable mentions are Elliott Smith and T.I. Though this was followed by years of listening to music that was sort of flying against that stuff, classic old jazz like Bird, Dizzy, Django and Billie.

Q. Is there anyone special you would like to work with?

When we founded Strange Hotels we took a drive and listened to the first few songs we had recorded, we are pretty critical of our own work so we started talking about how to improve and that led to thinking about who our dream producer would be. This list was short: James Murphy and whoever did the first two Strokes records. It turned out his name was Gordon Raphael. Fast forward a couple years later to the middle of the pandemic and it turns out that a friend of ours had worked with Gordon years back and they were still good friends. She generously sent him a few of our songs and he was actually into it. We talked about collaborating over a couple of zoom calls and he ended up producing our next single. It’s coming out October 15, 2021 and it’s called Teen Dream Fantasy. It’s strange and amazing to be working with Gordon and to have that kind of manifestation happen in front of you, it’s like a “is The Secret real??” moment.

Q. How would you describe the music you typically create?

We get asked that question a lot, after many different answers we settled on Indie-Electro. I don’t know though, it’s really hard to describe your own music. If anyone has any bright ideas on what it sounds like to them, slide in the dm’s.

Q. What is your creative process like?

Every song is different. Playing live is a separate medium from recording songs. There are songs in our show that have never been recorded, and there and recordings that have never been played live. Generally speaking, we write and record all of our songs with a complete disregard for the fact that 2 dudes might have to play it live someday. When we add songs into our live set, they end up being interpretations of the recordings. They usually have the same lyrics, melodies and chord progressions, but the instrumentation and arrangement will be different. Most of our recordings are 3 minute pop songs, whereas we have 10-15 minute long versions in the live set. Time just passes differently when you’re in a venue surrounded by people.

Q. The past few years have been interesting for us all to say the least. How did you both navigate and how are you currently navigating in this pandemic?We live together in Los Angeles so at first it was total fear and isolation. The first week we stayed up all night every night drinking beer at our kitchen table and talking about the end of the world. Talk about a trauma response. The next few months were pretty much slightly different versions of this. From there we sort of accepted the situation a bit more and just did what needed to survive and help who we could in our lives. It’s hard to put down a short form account of the next year and a half and frankly, it’s a bit of a blur, but it was tough to say the least. We coped (and are coping) by getting along as friends better than we ever had before in our lives, which is quite a feat because we really do get along and always have. Lessons learned? Take care of your people and let them take care of you. So corny, So true.

Q. If you have any advice in regards to Self Care or Mental Health Awareness what would that be?

Protect your energy and trust your instincts. Life is too short to suffer fools, and rest should be thought of as a productive activity. It’s important to remind yourself of that, because the vibe in our culture is that you need to work hard and not be lazy. Sleep is work, recharging is work. Taking time to imagine what you want your future to look like is work.

In recent weeks, global markets were agitated by the mere mention of a word, debt. From the almost catastrophe of Evergrande Group in China, as it sat on a mountain of liabilities, to the United States government’s need to raise its debt ceiling. Debt has become one dirty word for investors for the time being. When it comes to debt, we all know there is a price to pay as there is no such thing as a free lunch.

For the US to ensure they do not default on their obligations, there is no doubt that they have constantly raised their debt ceiling over the years. According to the US Treasury website, Congress has acted 78 separate times to permanently raise, temporarily extend, or revise the definition of the nation’s debt limit, since 1960. For the US, a failure is never an option as it will cause a devastating chain reaction to the financial market as well as the economy as a whole.

According to the Institute of International Finance (IIF) in its Global Debt Monitor report published on Sept 14, 2021, global debt, which includes government, household and corporate, and bank debt increased by US$4.8 trillion to reach a new all-time high of US$296 trillion. Over the past six quarters, as the pandemic has caused significant damage to the global economy and unprecedented response from governments, total global debt has expanded by US$36 trillion or 13.6% from just about US$260 trillion as at end of 2019.

Debts raised due to the pandemic perhaps have become the norm globally as well, as the government has no choice but to raise the required funding to support the economy. While the Fed has expanded its balance sheet by more than 100% since the pandemic, the liquidity it has provided has caused significant gain not only in traditional asset classes but into everything else. Home prices are rising, commodities have boomed and markets are buoyant and cryptos have soared.

Individuals’ Debts

As for individuals, debts are rather straightforward. There are generally two types of debt – good debt and bad debt. Good debts are those that make you financially better such as a study loan, mortgage, and business loan. It serves a bigger purpose with equity or earnings potential in the future. However, bad debts generally make a person financially worse off.

In the middle of this pandemic with people losing their jobs and finding it difficult to make ends meet, bad debt is becoming increasingly inevitable for many in the middle-income class group. This is due to a lack of savings and poor financial management. Financial literacy is key to the accumulation of wealth and to avoid getting into a bad debt situation.

Getting into debt involves a series of gradual innocent money mistakes. One of the biggest mistakes that people make which leads them to debt is not knowing how much money they should commit to their lifestyle. Several factors cause people to take on more debt than they can manage.

One of the factor is the need for instant gratification, which the urge to own assets fast without really think through about the cost and repayments. The other factor is Societal pressure, especially during this era of social media wave when image and status become paramount. Besides, the desperation in wanting to obtain an asset by using more loans to cover existing loans is also a factor.

When taking on debts, the rule of the thumb is to take on what you can comfortably repay in monthly payments. The key is to have the awareness to avoid them.

For Your Grammy Awards Consideration: David Serero receives six nominations in 4 categories, including Best Musical Theater Album and Producer of the Year.

Opera singer, actor, and Producer David Serero did not stop working during the pandemic and recorded several albums through his own record label. On Saturday, October 22nd, the first round of the “For Your Consideration” nominations were announced on the dashboard of the Recording Academy platform for the Grammy Awards. David Serero is nominated for the first time in the following categories:

Best Producer of the Year, Non-Classical: “Scarface, The Al Capone Musical” and “Anne Frank, a Musical.”

Best Musical Theater Album: “Scarface, The Al Capone Musical,” and “Anne Frank, a Musical.”

Best Spoken Word Album: “I, Napoleon” (One-Man-Play about Napoleon Bonaparte).

Best Engineered Album: “Scarface, The Al Capone Musical.”

Among the nominated works is Serero’s new musical piece “SCARFACE, The Al Capone Musical,” which he arranged, produced, and starred as Al Capone. He took Jazz standards, arranged them in hip-hop, and took Pop standards to turn them into jazz while adding operatic and musical theater elements. The musical is set to Off-Broadway premiere in 2022. The Original Cast Album Recording includes high profiles such as Malou Beauvoir, Lisa Bouchelle, Lisa Monde, Marcy Richardson.

Scheduled to continue in March 2020 Off-Broadway, the musical is now postponed to be re-opened in March 2022. Serero, who starred as Otto Frank, produced the Original Cast Recording with cast members of the staged performances such as Kristyn Vario, Lisa Monde during the pandemic. 

“I, Napoleon” is a One-Man-Play about Napoleon Bonaparte, written and performed by David Serero. It tells the story of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1779-1821), returning in 2021 to tell his story to today’s audiences.

These six nominations are the first For Your Consideration nominations at the Grammys for David Serero, who has been a member of the Recording Academy since 2018. “While I was filming a new movie on the other side of the world, in Madagascar, I was overwhelmed by the news. Though I’m more of a “stage guy,” these nominations are giving me so much hope for more recordings to be made, especially for dramatic works. So to have my work acknowledged by the Academy, especially among important colleagues, is already a strong victory for me. God is so good!”

The First round of Voting is open until November 5th, 2021. The final results will be on the 64th Grammy Awards Telecast of January 31st, 2022, live on CBS.
