Stonecrest Resorts, LLC Announces Closing on the Sale of Former Sears Building For $2.1 Million

STONECREST – October 14, 2021 – Stonecrest Resorts, LLC, a real estate company created to repurpose vacant real estate at the Mall at Stonecrest, announced today the closing on the sale of the former Sears building located at the Mall at Stonecrest, for approximately $2.1 million. The 15.1-acre parcel, which includes two buildings totaling 142,000 square feet, was purchased from the city of Stonecrest Urban Redevelopment Authority in a sale that closed yesterday.

Vaughn Irons, principal for Stonecrest Resorts and developer for the project, stated, “We are pleased to announce the completion of the transaction with the city of Stonecrest. The sale of the Sears building represents a new era for the mall and the Stonecrest community at large. Our plan to redevelop the building into a destination tourism attraction is a much-needed asset for this community.”

This project was made possible through the cooperation of the Stonecrest Urban Redevelopment Authority under the leadership of chair Jazzmin Cobble. “The Mall at Stonecrest is our #1 economic driver in the city and once we reviewed the plans and confirmed the funding was there we wanted to work together to make the project happen,” said Chairwoman Cobble. “This sale and the developer’s plans to establish Stonecrest as a regional destination is a very positive thing for this community.”

Stonecrest Resorts plans to repurpose the building into a family entertainment and lifestyle component for the mall. The team has significant redevelopment plans in place that will breathe new life into a building left vacant since 2017. The first phase will include the opening of SeaQuest Interactive Aquarium which will serve as the anchor tenant of the project. The aquarium will occupy 25,000 square feet on the lower level and has plans to open this Fall. This will be SeaQuest’s 10th location and will feature indoor and outdoor interactive adventures from across the globe including exotic sea life, sharks, reptiles, wallabies, kinkajous, and sloths, among other animal attractions. With the cooperation of the city of Stonecrest and DeKalb County, there are hopes to open SeaQuest within 30 days. Other plans for the building will be announced soon.

“We have believed for many years that Stonecrest was one of the very best locations in the country for SeaQuest, and are thrilled to be a part of the incredible vision for its future,” shared Vince Covino, CEO of SeaQuest.

SeaQuest was originally announced in 2017 as a part of the Atlanta Sports City project. Atlanta Sports Connection was the planned owner and operator of the sports complex and their inability to deliver on commitments derailed the project. Now restructured without Atlanta Sports Connection’s involvement, the remaining parties desired to move forward. “It was important to me that we delivered on what we promised a few years ago. Despite the delays due to my kidney disease and COVID-19, we continued to plan our resurgence from the ashes of that project,” Irons commented.

“We learned a lot from the problems we experienced with Atlanta Sports Connection and those lessons allowed us to move forward successfully with this effort,” said Russell Platt, CEO of Forum Partners and an investor in the project. “We evaluated the revised strategy and believed reinvesting in this new effort was the perfect way to create a viable asset for the community and for investors.”

The first phase of a planned $12 million renovation of the former Sears building began quietly in April 2021 when Stonecrest Resorts won a competitive bid for the property through an RFP process led by Stonecrest Urban Redevelopment Authority. Since then $1.5 million of building improvements has been made including upgrades to the plumbing, electrical, sprinkler system, and a brand new fire alarm system has been installed. After SeaQuest opens, the renovations are planned to continue this winter with a projected opening date of phase two in Spring 2022.

“We are excited about what is to come and what this redevelopment brings to the mall”, said Patricia Edge, General Manager at the Mall at Stonecrest. “The new plan for the Sears box will give our customers additional amenities and attractions they’ll definitely enjoy.”

The purchase of the building and completion of SeaQuest is designed to coincide with the Mall at Stonecrest’s 20th Anniversary being celebrated this month.

Atlanta Mayoral Candidate Slams ‘Silly Season’ After Text Attempts To Tie Her To Trump And Republicans

An Atlanta mayoral election candidate has slammed ‘silly season’ in politics after an attempt to ‘dirty’ her name by tying her to Donald Trump.

The upcoming contest will decide the next mayor of Atlanta, Georgia.

The election will be held on November 2, with a run-off election scheduled for November 30, if needed.

However, a text message sent out to residents in Atlanta, Georgia, on Monday has sparked concerns.

The message featured a picture of former US President Donald Trump, a Republican.

A picture of mayoral candidate Felicia Moore, a Democrat, is also on the text message.

The text message says: “Early voting starts tomorrow. Thank you to the Fulton County Republican Party for supporting Moore for Mayor.

“Taking back Georgia and Fulton County starts with taking back Atlanta. Then the White House in 2024.

“Join the Fulton County Republican Party in taking the city back with Felicia Moore when you vote.”

The text also says ‘please join Fulton County Republican Party’.

A resident – who labelled it as a ‘shady ad’ – says the text message attempts to tie Moore to Trump and the Republicans.

Meanwhile, Moore has issued a statement on the matter.

She said: “I see it’s the silly season in Atlanta politics. It’s something we’ve seen time and time again.

“An ‘anonymous opponent’ has attempted to dirty my campaign name, personal contact information and values.

“Frankly, it’s flattering to be considered enough of a threat to have outright lies spread about me by anonymous sources.

“On the eve of early voting, this is a predictable distraction from the important conversations about what really matters – how we keep Atlanta families safe.

“Moving forward, I’ll continue to do what I have done since day one and focus on making Atlanta a safe, affordable city where we can all live, work, raise a family and one day retire.”

There are more than a dozen people in the race to become the next Atlanta Mayor.

The election is being held after incumbent Keisha Lance Bottoms announced she will not be seeking re-election.

The run-off will only be held if no candidate secures a majority of the vote in the initial round of the election.

The candidates are Antonio Brown, Andre Dickens, Kirsten Dunn, Nolan English, Sharon Gay, Mark Hammad, Kenneth Hill, Rebecca King, Felicia Moore, Kasim Reed, Walter Reeves, Roosevelt Searles III, Richard Wright and Glenn Wrightson.

Fulton County Republican Party has not yet responded to a request for a comment in relation to the text message.

One of Moore’s main opponents in the election, Reed, has also been asked for a comment, but is yet to respond.

He added, “One of my favorite memories is the stories from a veteran Navy SEAL, how impactful he was to our country in saving human lives, and how impactful he felt we were to help him with his oral health.”

Tierre Ford Discusses his Urban Masterpiece “The Products of the American Ghetto” as it Releases for Online Streaming

The drama “The Products of the American Ghetto” explores issues of racism, poverty, policing, and the War on Drugs in Atlanta, Georgia, and is now accessible on Amazon Prime and Vimeo.

United States – October 12, 2021 – The 9th Inning Media Group and Atlanta Dream Team Productions have released “The Products of the American Ghetto” on streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime and Vimeo. From the well-known director Henderson Maddox and writer and producer Tierre Ford, the film, set during the War on Drugs-era in Atlanta, Georgia, follows a young boy fighting to protect and provide for himself and his mother by selling drugs. Based on true events, the feature-length film is a relevant and timely drama exploring the disparities that exist for Black Americans and the reality of the War on Drugs.

“The Products of the American Ghetto” was released in 2018 to run internationally, and stars Darrin Dewitt Henson as Easy. Darrin Dewitt Henson who formerly appeared in “Soul Food”, “The Inheritance”, and the television series “The Family Business.” The film also includes notable performances from actors such as Robin Givens, Tobias Truvillion, and Keith D. Robinson.  Viewers who watched films such as “Boyz In The Hood”, “Streets”, “Menace II Society”, and “Straight Outta Compton” can see a striking resemblance to the stark realities showcased in “Products of the American Ghetto”.

Tierre Ford, writer and producer of the film, touts that “The Products of the American Ghetto” amplifies the conversation about systemic racism in the United States and the truth about life in the Atlanta ghetto. “Every day, there are people stuck without the tools to get out of the ghetto.  Black people were historically sold like products in the United States, and the resulting disadvantages and advantages of life as a Black person in America can be seen in this film,” said Mr. Ford.

Starting with 8-year-old Brian growing up in Techwood urban housing in Atlanta during the 1980s, “The Products of the American Ghetto” observes the boy growing up and witnessing the traumas his mother and sister go through and follows him through his journey to protect them. During one of the most historic moments of Atlanta’s history during the Nixon-Administration’s War on Drugs, the film recognizes the underpinnings of poverty, drug trading, and gang dynamics in the United States. 

“Before the Miami gangs and drugs started flooding in, it was the small gangs in Atlanta. Drugs had not really taken over yet. The ghetto was more like family, everyone knew each other. But then, you had this whole different city of a completely different type of people, gangs from Miami, coming into Atlanta to take the whole game over,” says Barrett Dungy, CEO of Urban Home Entertainment, distributor of the film. “They did not care who they took out in the process. They had a message in mind, and they were there to deliver it.”
