The Tech Job Market 2020: Can You Still Hit Your Engineering Hiring Goals?

0

COVID 19’s impact in the tech sector highlights its importance in today’s circumstances, increased demand for consumer solutions, need for extra support and security, and clamor for more online services. It’s not unfair to say that everyone is scrambling to understand and get a plan in place. Moreso, companies are discovering that technology is now a critical part of their survival. They need to reinvent themselves and innovate their processes, otherwise, they will be left behind, or die.

As the whole economy is reeling, 70% of industries are freezing hires and laying off employees. However, the engineering and IT industries continue to hire and are driving demand primarily to engineering positions. Engineering job hires increased steadily during the starting in February rising through July, and there’s the expectation that this will continue to rise till 2021. Companies who are hiring in IT are focusing on the roles of Software and App Developers, User Support Specialists, System Engineers, and Web Developers.

With the kind of demand for engineers today, can you hit your hiring goals for your engineering teams?

On the upside, COVID-19 is changing the landscape of tech hiring and the industry is now more open to mobile hiring and remote work. This means that the geographic footprint for hiring is getting bigger. Where you used to only be able to hire talents from your city, you can now hire further and even worldwide if you choose to. Logistics are also easier for remote interviews. Now more than ever, businesses need to get down and create a talent plan for hiring.

Questions to ask when preparing for a Talent Plan

  • How are you hiring? Are you using/considering take-home exercises, pair ¹programming, and/or detailed architecture interviews)
  • Are you fully remote or hiring across multiple metros in the US/Canada?
  • Do you have a full-time technical recruiter on the team?
  • Are you hiring 4+ engineers this year and likely next year?
  • How are you handling your attrition rates?

After creating a talent plan, create your remote hiring playbook. This is important so you can make your processes consistent. This Tech Recruiting Playbook for Remote Startups from WovenTeams is a good start. There’s a slew of tips for companies shifting to remote and other best practices for today’s distributed workforce. Woven does technical simulations and online take-home assessments for remote hiring engineers. Gitlab’s (super) extensive remote manifesto is also a good starter guide.

When it comes to hiring tech professionals, assessing the basics (technical know-how, problem-solving proficiencies, communication skills, and critical thinking abilities) will continue to play an important part in the early stages of the interview process. But as the industry shifts to remote, a focus on values alignment will be more important than ever when making tough hiring decisions.

There are also other challenges that you need to consider. Businesses are so used to physical interviews. They need to be deliberate in shifting their interview processes. Where before you can catch a lot in a single interview, online interviews need to be designed for softer interaction so it doesn’t feel as transactional.

The Secret of Tech Recruiting

Alongside the increase of unemployment and job applications, there has been a corresponding increase in the cost of reviewing those applications. Simply put, companies are not able to keep up with the incoming volume.

Most leaders know that identifying and recruiting the right talent to their organizations is one of their toughest and most important responsibilities. And yet they know that the main tools we use today — resumes and unstructured interviews — offer weak, unreliable, and often biased signals to a candidate’s true abilities and potential.

But they continue to use these tools because they’re familiar and they create strong feelings of certainty (even if that certainty is misplaced). Startups are hungry to recruit high performers for their organization. And despite the effort and investment they make in recruiting and interviewing talent, they often miss out on people with incredible potential all the time.

New concerns on the online work model arise such as job-hopping, frequent ghostings, or the developers’ inability to focus, makes it a tougher landscape for businesses with no action plan in place for a proper online onboarding which is not just a copy-paste of their face to face onboarding process.

By prioritizing performance over scanning resumes companies can build a hiring system with less implicit bias to ensure the right candidate gets the job. Advancing more fringe candidates results in a bigger pool of talented applicants. This in turn leads to more diverse teams and higher-quality candidates.

It’s an open secret but one that companies have ignored before. That you can only build a high performing remote team by testing engineers for technical and other essential job skills and not just on their resumes. And yes, you can hit your hiring goals by reanalyzing your hiring process. Because whether you like it or not, you are remote now.

0

Bangalore, India – The pandemic has spawned an era of digital businesses not considered possible earlier. These businesses are moving several aspects of life from education and entertainment to health and culture from offline to online. The move poses unique questions, one of which relates to law, regulation and compliance. Addressing legal issues faced by digital businesses requires inter-disciplinary expertise in law, business and technology. Such expertise is however not very common among traditional lawyers and firms.

Very few lawyers are able to merge different areas of law to answer complex questions posed by today’s digital businesses. The issues become even more difficult when novel technology and business models are added to the equation. Only technology and business focused lawyers with a multi-dimensional understanding and expertise are able to help digital businesses achieve their goals by providing strategic inputs and advice to help them succeed.

In the context of BananaIP’s work with digital businesses, Dr. Kalyan C. Kankanala, Managing Partner of BananaIP, says, “I believe we are among the few firms that have the background and experience of working with different types of digital and electronic businesses and helping them succeed. These businesses require inputs from various perspectives ranging from IP and technology law to privacy, data protection and eCommerce law, and we have such expertise. We are in fact among the few firms that has strong patent, copyright and trademark divisions as well as strong technology, privacy, eCommerce and entertainment law groups.”

Mr. Sanjeeth Hegde, Senior Partner at BananaIP, who heads the entertainment law division points out that the success of their clients speaks for their work. “We work with OTT platforms, entertainment companies, popular mobile apps, inventory and marketplace eCommerce entities, AI and ML driven applications, fantasy sports portals, ride hiring and sharing service providers, and many more. Our experience and knowledge are well rounded and we provide the comfort that many other lawyers cannot provide to digital businesses. Our customer friendly and integrated models allow our clients to spend effectively and grow rapidly,” adds Mr. Hegde.

Because of its exceptional background and expertise, Mr. Hegde states that his division has witnessed significant growth of work from digital businesses during the pandemic. As the world changes, inter-disciplinary and integrated approach like that of BananaIP Counsels may prove to be essential for lawyers to survive and succeed. Digital businesses are here to stay, and lawyers will have to adapt to their diverse needs if they wish to work with them.

The ultimate student gadget – The First Boxer Shorts With Pockets

0
After several years of selling in Europe, the moment has finally arrived, Today the launch of Pockies in the USA. It is the first boxer shorts with pockets.

A boxer short with pockets. Perfect for that hungover day or your lazy weekend. To keep all your important stuff – phone, keys, lighter – close. That was the idea of three Dutch students. Now, four years later, the founders sold over 200.000 products in the Netherlands.

Couch

It all started in the student house of Michiel Dicker (27), Rob ten Hoove (26) and Karel Bosman (29). Dicker was on the couch, in his ‘regular’ underwear, with no place to put his phone. “Wouldn’t it be nice if these boxer shorts had pockets,” he thought out loud. Bosman jumped up and said: “Dude, this is it! Let’s do this!” And so an adventure began.

The three boys put all their savings together and ordered the first batch of Pockies. Two thousand pieces. “Those were exciting times. We were either going to sell, or be stuck with a truckload of underwear for the rest of our lives.” Dicker says. Friends were asked to model, the website was built by themselves.

Sold out

The fear of having a lifetime supply of boxer shorts proved to be unfounded. Within three weeks the first batch was sold out entirely. “We could not believe it. We had to run from our lectures, or skip them altogether, to prepare orders.” a laughing Dicker says. Nowadays the fulfillment is done by a different party. “We chose a distribution centre where people with a distance from the job market work. They are a lot better than we are!”

Students

From the start a lot of orders have come from students. “We often hear that entire student houses hang out in our underwear. And that they give our Pockies as presents to each other.” Dicker can see why: “It is a fun product with a nice story. And name one student who hasn’t spent their days on the couch?”

Crossing the border

But the ambition of the three entrepreneurs does not stop at the Dutch border. “Any student in the world should be able to experience a pair of Pockies. Our focus will now be on the USA.”

About Pockies

It all started on the couch when one founder was sitting in regular boxer shorts and had nowhere to put his phone. “Why don’t boxers have pockets,” he thought out loud. The two other boys in the room thought it was a good idea, so they put together their savings produce a first batch of pocketed boxer shorts. Since then Pockies has sold over 200.000 boxer shorts in the Netherlands alone.

LA-Based Electronic Rap Artist Wingman Pairs Aviation With Music On Debut Album “Weird New Feelings”

0

Wingman is a Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter and producer making a name for himself blending a unique mix of rap and energetic electronic drops. He came out swinging, dropping a debut album as his very first release. Weird New Feelings, the eight-song debut, has already garnered a few million streams online since it dropped in August to incredibly positive critical reception.

But it’s not just his presence in the LA music scene that’s making waves, it’s the brand he’s built as a daring aviator. Wingman pilots a small, yellow, helicopter-like aircraft called a ‘gyrocopter’, often seen cruising the LA beaches or circling downtown. His Instagram, for example, is littered with clips and stories of epic flight adventures, often accompanied with songs from the Flume-inspired Weird New Feelings project. So what makes this eclectic combination work? The feeling that it creates. Wingman pairs the literal feeling of taking off down the runway with beats that charge up like a helicopter rotor before flight.

Though a songwriter for as long as he can remember, Wingman got acquainted with aviation in his early twenties.

“I was grabbing lunch with a friend in LA, and he invited me to go fly ‘little personal helicopters’ after lunch. Before that day, I had never even considered becoming a pilot. I was focused on music and starting to define a sound. I didn’t want any distractions. But the second I was in the cockpit and feeling the flight controls, it was over. Sold.”

He saved up for a few years to put a down payment on an aircraft of his own while continuing to hone his production and songwriting talent. Eventually, everything came together. He was flying a new gyrocopter coast to coast when the stage name “Wingman” came to him. It was an obvious opportunity to fuse different themes prevalent in his music and lifestyle.

Notable flight journeys found him discovering meteoric craters in the Arizona deserts, and chasing sunsets over the oil fields of east Texas. While bogged down in Georgia due to nasty weather on a cross-country flight, he wrote Hurricane, a crowd-pleaser single on the Weird New Feelings project. He even filmed a music video for the title song, “Weird New Feelings”, from the air. Wingman rapped from the cockpit over downtown LA and spiraled over cloud-covered Palos Verdes, creating a truly unique feeling to pair with the song.Wingman released a debut music video for his song Distracted (also on the Weird New Feelings album) tuning his audiences into thoughtful lyrics over a soaring beat.

So what’s next for Wingman?

“I’ve been filming a ton, both in the copter and outside of it. Got some wild music video footage on the way. Definitely pushing more electronic drops on my upcoming songs. And as the beats get bigger, my aircraft starts feelings smaller. Maybe one of these days I might look for the next size up.”

Raising Consciousness About Unconscious Bias: Virtual Training Program Focuses On Bias

0

Recent social and racial injustice protests in the U.S. have spurred conversations about racism and discrimination. Debra Nelson, president of Elevate Communications, says some people do or say hurtful things because they are unaware of their own biases. To address this issue, Elevate Communications offers an interactive training program called Raising Consciousness About Unconscious Bias. The virtual training provides timely discussion about implicit bias, including how to identify micro-aggressions, and strategies to circumvent bias in behaviors, relationships, and decision-making. “We are addressing a real time need in our society right now,” Nelson said.

While people likely know their prejudices and preferences, Nelson feels most are unaware of social and cultural conditioning on their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. “The first step is willingness to recognize that unconscious bias can show up in ways we don’t expect, know about or see,” she said.

Nelson’s work as a trainer began at her mother’s kitchen table where she played school with her two younger brothers, teaching them from her fifth-grade textbooks. Her desire to pursue a teaching career was sidetracked when she became a corporate executive. After leading diversity and communication initiatives in media, higher education, construction, automotive manufacturing and marketing, Nelson decided to return to her first love, teaching.

Today Nelson provides training to employees at corporations, universities, and associations. “We want to help people become more comfortable addressing sensitive topics. At the same time, we care to encourage inclusive behaviors that enhance team morale, productivity, and innovation in the workplace,” said Nelson. “Raising Consciousness About Unconscious Bias creates thoughtful conversations about difficult topics. What I know is most people want to be better, not just for themselves, but for their co-workers and employers. We can help them,” she said.

Elevate Communications also offers customized training webinars on inclusion, diversity, emotional intelligence, and leadership development.  For more information or to schedule a webinar, visit www.elevatellc.co or email dnelson@elevatellc.co.

Debra Nelson is an experienced communication and diversity and inclusion professional, having held executive positions at Mercedes-Benz companies, DaimlerChrysler and MGM Resorts International, where she oversaw and implemented diversity and inclusion initiatives and related training programs. Prior to founding Elevate Communications she led corporate communications at Brasfield & Gorrie. She is the former board chair of the Urban Chamber of Commerce in Las Vegas, and she has been recognized as one of the nation’s leading diversity and inclusion practitioners by Black Enterprise, DiversityInc, and Savoy magazines.

This is why we give you some of the best landscaping ideas for your backyard. As it is a section of the house, it deserves to be more appealing, just like the inside. Typically, landscaping is supposed to be more fun, casual, and you could use your design skills or hire a designer to help you make the backyard look more appealing. We take you through some of the best landscaping ideas for your backyard.

  1. You should keep in mind your budget– Identify how much you are willing to spend on your backyard landscaping, whether you are hiring an architect or designer, and the tools you will need for the process. You should also consider the best markets to buy your flowers or shrubs and factor in transportation costs or whether you will plant them by yourself.
  2. Learn about the type of landscaping design that works for your space– You need to identify different designs given your backyard size or condition. Different landscaping designs work for various backyards. For instance, if your backyard is sloped, you may want to consider subtle terracing because landscaping a slope is challenging.
  3. Anchor your backyard with non-poisonous shrubs and bushes -The shrubs and bushes will add height and structure to the shaping of your landscaping. Choose shrubs that grow either perpendicularly or horizontally, depending on your preference. You may consider growing shrubs in containers and avoid poisonous plants in the backyard.
  4. Choose colorful flowering plants– this will add life, variety, and color to your backyard. Consider blooms, which are a great way of attraction and nourish pollinators. You don’t want to come out of a beautiful house and read or sit in a boring backyard.
