A powerful authentic theatrical work that melds history with the future

Teddy Hayes’

URBAN OUTCRIES:

An African American Trilogy

  • This Trilogy of plays spans four generations of an African American family
  • Presents a part of African American history that has been erased from US history
  • Is rooted in the tradition of Black Theatre
  • Chronicles the depth and range of the African American culture

It is 2020, black lives do matter and it’s more vital than ever to understand the histories of people who have been marginalized, to understand how biased perceptions and stereotypes occur when there is lack of knowledge and understanding of others history and culture.

These plays offer a deep and dramatic insight into four generations of an African American family and how circumstances can create a political and social dynamic and mindset within a culture. They portray previous generations of African Americans, their historical economic realities and explore how problems were perceived, faced and solved as well as how people saw themselves. It also demonstrates how the differences in people’s economic, cultural and social histories can impact on their world view through the generations.

The plays are a rare insight into the African American culture, portraying the richness of the language used in authentic voices. Although they show the struggles faced, there is no blame, pity or apology.  What rings true is their resounding resilience in the face of life. People fall, they stumble, they change, they grow but above it all they live and breathe their experience and own it unapologetically as they mark out and love their roles as part of that great melting pot. Though burnt and scorched they are making their way along the road, living their part and version of the American dream.

They reflect the author’s experience of growing up in Ohio during the ‘50’s and ‘60’s, and his large extended family’s lives, thoughts, emotional turmoil and conflicts. He grew up rooted in their stories and language

He wrote this trilogy to preserve their lives and those of people like them, to celebrate some of the historical mindset and psychology that grew out of this African American culture and so that future generations can understand that African American experience doesn’t have to live in reflection of, acquiescence to, or compare itself with America’s dominant Eurocentric culture in order to be considered valid.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE PLAYS

The Trilogy covers the period 1931 to 2015, across 4 generations of the Marshall family in Cleveland Ohio.

PAPA’S BATHTUB GIN

1st and 2nd Generation Marshall Family

It’s 1931 and the USA is in the middle of its most devastating economic depression ever. In addition, the government has prohibited the making and drinking of alcohol. As a result, bootleggers are making illegal whiskey and waging war for territory and customers all across the country; because illegal whiskey has proven to be one of the few sources of guaranteed and sustainable income during the present hard times.

1967: YEAR OF THE SACRED COW

3nd Generation Marshall Family

In the White House and other US government circles, the summer of 1967 is being called “The Long Hot Summer” because during the past year 159 race riots have broken out across the country. Malcolm X was assassinated in New York sixteen months earlier, the Black Panthers are threatening police with armed violent response on national TV and Carl Stokes, is set to become elected as the first black Mayor of a major US city. “Saint” Marshall is caught in the crossfire of changing times, both professionally and personally.

FISHIN’ IN THE SKY

4th Generation Marshall Family

It’s 2015 and a special service has been arranged at the local church to dedicate the new building to the memory of Ronell Marshall.  All seems to be going well until the circumstances surrounding the execution of Ronell’s father’s will are revealed and create turmoil, unlocking a long-hidden secret that could destroy or heal the family.

Reading of “Papa’s Bathtub Gin” Leimert Theatre Los Angeles 2017

PAPA’S BATHTUB GIN: Created by producer/playwright Teddy Hayes, as part of his Urban Outcries Trilogy was presented at Leimert Theatre in Los Angeles

“Papa’s Bathtub Gin” is set during the depression during the 1930s, as the Black community attempts to weather the Great Depression through the manufacture of illegal liquor, aka “bathtub gin.” During the course of their efforts to make ends meet, the makers of bathtub gin encounter local crime bosses, bickering within their own ranks and an epiphany that threatens their very livelihoods.

The first staged reading of this production was mounted in London, England, in 2016. “Papa’s Bathtub Gin” is based on Hayes’ personal family history as they transitioned from the South to the Midwest.

Papa’s Bathtub Gin” held its first public presentation in the United States at Leimert Park’s Vision Theater (Los Angeles California), in August of 2017, as part of their annual summer festival of staged readings. This performance was performed by a stellar cast including Thyais Walsh (“Diff’rent Strokes,” “Panther”), Derek Shaun (“The Young and the Restless,” “40 days and Nights,”), Juanita Jennings (“Basic Instinct,” “Baby Boy”) and Richard Gant (“The Big Lebowski,” “Bones,” “Deadwood,” and “General Hospital”).

Audience supporters set up a petition to National Theatre in U.K. to stage “Papa’s Bathtub Gin”

Young innovators scope top honour at international STEM competition

0
Future engineers tackle global plastic pollution head

London, UK – The British International Education Association (BIEA) was proud to host its third STEM competition this week. The 2020 BIEA International STEM competition to ‘Save Our Shores from Plastic Pollution’ encourages young innovators from around the world to use technology to help counter the plastic waste epidemic and save threatened marine and land-based life through means of waste collection and recycling said waste.

36 finalist teams aged 9-17 from 14 countries and regions (US, UK, Bosnia, Indonesia, South Africa, Nigeria, Philippines, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, UAE, Malaysia, Thailand, India, and Hong Kong) showcased their designs and prototypes to an international judging panel.

At the online award ceremony, teams from all over the world shared their experience. Despite the disruption caused by COVID-19 to their education, these young people made the valiant effort to continue with their projects remotely. Winning designs included the application of enzymes dissolve plastic waste, redeployment of military tankers and automated robotic mechanisms in order to collect the plastics.

The judges thought several of the entries had real potential to be developed into working machines. Prof Rick Chandler, Chairman of the Communications Management Association was overwhelmed by the talents, ‘The teams found some brilliant STEM technology and most importantly learned team working and critical thinking skills. Some designs have been made into working models and could be deployed in the near future.”

The Grand Prize was won by Team Amet Activist (UK), other top honours went to Team Plastic Collector (USA) for Best Design (9-11), Team Big Brain Time (India) for Best Video (15-17). Full list of winners and their countries are on the website: https://bieacompetition.org.uk/announcement/

Evie Mackenzie, 17 from Team Amet Activists, said ‘The BIEA competition has expanded my learning, environmental awareness and my confidence and had encouraged me to pursue a STEM career with all the skills I have learnt. To be globally recognised is an honour and now more than ever I think competitions like this are so important to get younger people to apply their learning and expand their interest in STEM to make the differences to the world they want to see.’

“The team showed amazing resilience and strength of character in light of the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic brought about, completing the entirety of their project by collaborating online amidst the lockdown.” – Amelia Perry, Big Bang Competition Manager at EngineeringUK.

David Hanson, STEM competition chairman at BIEA hope the competition will engage everyone to tackle this global issue,  “We know that the world has a plastic problem as our oceans and lands have become polluted with our carelessly discarded plastic waste. This plastic will take thousands of years to decompose on land, whilst the plastic in the oceans break up into toxin-laden tiny particles, causing chemical pollution in the oceans. By bringing attention to this crisis and discussing how scientific technology can help clean up plastic waste before it becomes environmentally dangerous, we at the BIEA hope to engage today’s international youth to use education to become the ones who can help save the planet of plastic pollution,”  said David Hanson, STEM competition chairman at BIEA.

Life SUCKS – Screw Ups Create Killer Success

0
A book entitled “Life Suck$” written by Albert M. Carter, M.Ed.

Suffering is undoubtedly a painful experience for most people, but if you can get some motivational doses, in any manner, the experience might become less painful. Author and self proclaimed culture shifter, Albert M. Carter was compelled to write a book entitled Life Suck$ which contains some interesting chapters for those who are going through challenging times. His purpose is to create new hope and change the way people think about the rough patches in their lives. According to him, screwing up has the ability to motivate a person more than anything else and after tough times if you change the way you think about your problems, you can set forth growth. These challenges can have a surprising ending, these issues can lead to various forms of success. These “screw up create killer success”.

Sometimes we feel out of place and lost in our daily lives. Has it become your habit to ponder over the meaning of your existence? Then there is a good chance for you to turn your weakness into your superpower. Read this book for proper guidance and feel that hidden power within you. The author wants to make you realize that stress and depression are not stronger than you. Everyone knows that life is a roller coaster ride and each one of us goes through the highs and lows. The highs are always short-lived, at least they appear so but the lows are just too burdensome to be experienced. None of us would want to go through the low phase but the bitter reality is that we have to. All we need to do is be calm in these situations, look for the lessons, and try to find out the solution to our problems.

When things aren’t going your way most people get frustrated, upset and scared, which is completely natural and okay. So accept these emotions and try to make them your ladder towards success. One of the key things that this book highlights is the various ways to reduce frustration during difficult times. You can move forward once you learn how to change your thinking. The key is to identify your thoughts and keep them from bouncing around in the past or a possible future by reconnecting with this moment.

If you feel like you are going through hell, don’t stop, keep going. Screwing up often leads to a better you. Sometimes we really think that it’s a full stop for our life. But if you think it’s due to any external factor, you’re wrong. It is very easy to get stuck in negative things when you start thinking that your life, your week or month isn’t going well. But don’t forget that there are still things that are going perfectly in the right direction in your life.

So, if you are going through a tough time in your life then think:

  • What is the thing that I can learn from this situation?
  • How can I adjust myself to avoid making the same mistake and to likely do better the next time?

Mama Bev’s Bakery Makes A Difference With Hot Meals

0

Hales Corners, Wisconsin – July 2, 2020 – When Gary Plassmeyer, Andrew Baer and Alycia Pogreba founded Mama Bev’s Bakery, located at 5620 S.108th St in Hales Corners WI, they knew it had one main purpose in mind: making a difference in the community.

Mama Bev’s is a new bakery retail and distribution company focused on one product, St. Louis Butter Cake.  For those of you who don’t know what butter cake is, think of a perfect combination of cheesecake and yellow cake with just the right amount of butter to boot.  It was created in St. Louis MO in the late 1930’s and has since become a staple in that community.  Gary, who grew up in St. Louis, introduced it to the Milwaukee market about 2 years ago and it has taken on a mind of its own since then.

“Mama Bev’s primary focus isn’t entirely on cakes. Faith, family community and consistency are at the base of our core values and the cake is just an added bonus. We have been feeding Milwaukee hospitals weekly since the end of March and have recently taken on a one of a kind, hot meal initiative right here in our own backyard,” says Mama Bev’s Gary Plassmeyer.

About Mama Bev’s Bakery

Working closely with Southbrook Church, Hales Corners Lutheran Church, Ebenezer Stone Ministries and God Touch MKE to feed over 500 people hot meals on July 11, 2020 as part of a new and ongoing outreach to make a difference.  The meals will be given away in the God Touch MKE parking lot located on 1501 W. Lincoln Ave, Milwaukee WI at 1130am.  Contact God Touch Milwaukee for further information.

Gary Plassmeyer adds, “This is just a small portion of what our group of committed people are up to.  We have also been building weekly hot meals, starting at 300 and working our way to 1,000, to take out to whomever is in need. With the food being hot, it is the only hot food delivered to those in need within the metro Milwaukee area.”

Tranquility Hospitality Management Scores Investment From Major VC Firm

0

Tranquility Hospitality Management, creators of the highly anticipated TranquilityNET platform for hotels, has received an investment of 50,000,000 ISK which is approximately $289,000 in USD and €257,000 in EUR from Icelandic VC firm Eyrir Sprotar. “TranquilityNET is a marvelous piece of software that brings many different types of technology together. We’re thrilled to be a part of hospitality history,” said a representative from Eyrir Sprotar in July.

TranquilityNET is a hotel property management system (PMS) that is entirely cloud-based which is focused on extreme security. In early 2020, over 300 hotels in Iceland signed on to test a beta version which was contingent on fully utilizing TranquilityNET when it officially launches in mid-2021. Reviews for the beta version of the PMS system have been extremely positive from those who have tested it out.

Aside from receiving funding from Eyrir Sprotar, Tranquility Hospitality Management is expected to raise a large amount of funds from their upcoming ITHA event which will allow investors around the world to obtain a chunk of the company. Tranquility Hospitality Management is expecting to raise over 110,000,000 ISK from the ITHA event in the form of multiple currencies. Sadly, the ITHA event may be difficult to get into. Only 3,000 candidates are being chosen which may be discouraging to long-time investors.

The future of TranquilityNET looks sharp and bright as it is expected to capture at least 15% of the worldwide hotel PMS market by 2030. Although we probably won’t see heavy hitters like Hilton or Marriott taking a part in the TranquilityNET revolution, you can definitely expect most of the smaller hotels and motels to utilize TranquilityNET software over the next few years.

Finding the right person for your company is getting more and more difficult.

0

Not only does the candidate need to have the appropriate skill set that will help them succeed, they also need to be a culture fit. One way to make sure you hire the right people is to ensure you’re attracting the right person! Not only is video an effective way to showcase your business, it’s also the best way to introduce your organization to someone without unnecessarily having to invest time in the candidate.

Did you know that job postings with video icons are viewed 12% more than postings without videos, and that companies receive a 34% greater application rate when they add a video to their job listings?

That’s because showing, rather than telling job seekers about your company, is much more effective and engaging. A well-crafted recruiting video injects personality and emotion into your brand — it can distinguish your organization from the vast sea of sameness and make people want to be a part of your story.

And by offering an authentic picture of your organization’s culture, people, offices, big wins and core values and mission, videos can also help weed out applicants who may not be the right fit.

Reason #1: To boost your presence in search results

Using videos in recruitment is a great way to boost your SEO efforts and improve your presence in search results. According to Brightcove, video drives a 157% increase in organic traffic from search engine results pages (SERP).

In other words, if you add videos to your company career pages they will rank higher in Google’s search results. Simply put, Google loves videos

Reason #2: To reach more candidates

People also love videos! This is why people share videos more often than text and images. According to Wordstream, video generates an amazing 1200% more shares than text and images combined!

In other words, if you add a video to your job postings, more people will share your job postings. As a result, your job postings will be able to reach a significantly greater number of people.

Reason #3: To get more job posting views

In today’s candidate-driven job market, job seekers have many job opportunities. To hire the best people, you need to differentiate your job postings to attract their attention.

A great way to do it is to add videos to your job postings. According to CareerBuilder, job postings with video icons are viewed 12% more than postings without video!

Reason #4: To get more applicants

Besides attracting the attention of your potential job candidates, videos are also great for convincing candidates to apply to your open job positions.

CareerBuilder survey has found that job postings with videos have a 34% greater application rate. In other words, by adding a video to your job postings you can get a significantly greater number of job applicants to choose from.

Reason #5: To ensure a cultural fit

A video is a great tool you can use to ensure better cultural fit of your job applicants. If you present your potential candidates with a video which shows everyday life at your workplace, your potential job candidates will be able to imagine themselves working at your company.

Thus, they will be able to assess if a job at your company is what they are looking for. As a result, your potential job candidates will self-select and opt out of your hiring process if they are not a good fit.

Reason #6: To promote your employer brand

Videos are perfect for promoting your employer brand and presenting your company as a great employer. You can use videos to tell a story about your company, highlight your company values and present your employee value proposition. You can also showcase your company culture and your workplace and give potential candidates a glimpse into an everyday life at your office

All this will help you do more than just tell candidates that you’re a great employer. By using videos, you can literally show them how great is to work at your company.

Reason #7: To enhance candidate experience

Videos are most commonly used in the attraction stage of the candidates’ journey. A video is a powerful medium which can be used to present your employer brand and company culture and sell your employe value proposition to your potential job candidates. This is why many companies have started adding videos at their career site and sharing videos on their company’s social media profiles and using them in their cold recruiting emails. Indeed, video recruiting emails are a great way to win the best job candidates

However, videos can also be used in the later stages of your hiring process. Videos are a great way to deliver a differentiated message to your job applicants! By using videos you can ensure a timely and personalized communication process throughout your hiring process, which can significantly improve your candidate experience

Reason #8: To save time

Since job postings with videos attract more job applicants, you won’t have to waste your time promoting your open job positions across numerous different channels. You will be able to get more applicants in a shorter period of time. As a result, you will significantly shorten your whole hiring process and improve your time to hire

Finally, you shouldn’t neglect the power of using videos for screening and interviewing. Video interviewing process will save you the time needed for schedulingtraveling and welcoming candidates in your office.

Reason #9: To save money

Since job postings with videos have more views, shares and higher application rate, you won’t have to spend so much money on promoting them to get a sustainable number of job candidates in your hiring pipelines.

Another way using videos in recruitment can save your company’s buck is by conducting video job interviews. An Aberdeen Group report, ROI of Video Collaboration, found that 72% of managers surveyed identified “reduction in travel costs” as the primary reason for using video interviews.

Vidjobs was founded in 2017 by Simone and Charles. Having worked in the recruitment and marketing industry for over 10 years, they saw the success of using videos as part of a recruitment strategy for their clients.

Are you using recruitment marketing videos to their fullest potential? If not, 2020 may be the year to get started.

In 2020, companies must go the extra mile to strengthen their employer brand in a tight hiring environment.

Recruitment marketing videos have proven beneficial in this regard, helping to attract candidates at the start of the recruitment funnel. Videos can also be used throughout the recruitment process to deliver a more engaging candidate experience.

Vidjobs helps employers to:

  • Boost your presence in search results
  • Reach more candidates
  • Get more job posting views
  • Help to get more applicants
  • Showcase your cultural fit
  • Promote your brand, using our platform and social media channels
  • Help employers Save money
