Writer of Marvel’s ‘The Punisher’ Depicts Cops as Heroes in New Comic

Award-winning writer, Mike Baron, releases a radical new graphic novel called “Thin Blue Line,” where rather than a science-fiction superhero, he makes the hero a single mom who’s also a police officer

 

Novelist Mike Baron made a name for himself in the comics industry with a legendary five year run on Marvel Comics’ first ongoing series for The Punisher, a popular anti-hero that recently got his own Netflix series. Now the award-winning writer is set to stir up controversy with his next comic Thin Blue Line. With superheroes popular in both comics and film, this comic book is unique in that the protagonist is a single mother who works full-time as a cop. Baron was inspired to write the story to show his support for law enforcement.

The comics industry has drastically evolved in recent years, with the likes of Mike Baron making a mark with his own creations such as Nexus, The Badger and last year’s hilarious Florida Man. Over the course of his career, the Eisner-winning writer of comics and novels has worked at Marvel, DC Comics, Valiant, and Dark Horse Comics, writing many of the biggest titles in the industry including The Flash, Green Lantern, Star Wars, and dozens more superhero and sci-fi tales. With Thin Blue Line, Baron is bringing atwist to the traditional superhero plot with a gritty, realistic, and entertaining tale featuring a diverse cast of realistic characters.

 

Mike recruited artist Joe Arnold, a police officer, who personifies the experience and accurately depicts the plight of average cops. He also brought in inker Jeff Slemons, who is an outstanding artist as well.

“I’ve known Joe since long before he became a cop. He was always drawing and a regular at our local monthly comic meetings, along with many other industry pros like Gabe Eltaeb. Joe was a natural fit for the project and brought authenticity to it.”

Once the artwork was complete, Baron and his team pitched the tale to numerous publishers, but none were willing to take a chance after learning it depicted the “Defund the Police” movement in a bad light. So Mike and his team decided to launch a crowdfunding campaign in order to raise the finances to color and letter the book and then distribute it themselves.

“We had enormous success self-distributing my Florida Man graphic novel earlier this year” Baron said, referring to a humor comicbook based on his series of novels. “That comic was ‘neither fish nor fowl’, although there are fish and fowl in it – and my readers loved it!”

Christiansen is the 5th generation great granddaughter of Sequoyah the Cherokee who created the Cherokee syllabary from her mother, Mary Ann Groundhog’s side.

Christiansen is also a distant cousin of Will Rogers. Premiere of the film “Liberate” at AMC Theatre in New York

The screenplay features brilliant dialogue designed to ignite laughter throughout the script. From start to finish, Marshall’s adventures “On the Ball” prove very entertaining.

About the characters:

Marshall: 

Marshall Arts is a black male in his 30s. He is Handsome, Determined, and Thinks on his feet. Always prepared to make the best of a bad situation. As he describes himself, “I’m Pisces. Single. Love Sushi. I’m partial to long romantic walks at sunset on the beach.”

When he is accused of murder, totally unrelated to him, he doesn’t shy away from taking a stand for himself, which shows him in a bold, courageous light. He says, “I didn’t kill anybody, and I didn’t roll into town. Until a couple of hours ago, I was on Interstate 55, on board a Southern Trailways bus, bound for New Orleans.”

Chief Barr:

Chief Barr is a Caucasian male between 50-62 years of age. He is the Chief of Police of Ball, Mississippi. Big and beefy. Wears a uniform whose shirt refuses to stay tucked into his pants. Habitually chews Wrigley’s Doublemint gum. Has no patience for anyone trying to bump him around.

Eve:

Eve Ho is a Beautiful black Amer-Asian woman, between 25-35 years of age. Intelligent. Refuses to back down to anyone offering her grief.

Her dad died a year ago, and she seems quite okay with talking about it, which shows how emotionally mature and stable she is. “My dad was in the army. Served in Viet Nam. He was born here. Twenty years after the war he met my mother. She was a Vietnamese refugee. They got together and produced me. I was five when my mother ran off with a mechanic from Mobile.”

The script ends with solved murder cases, Chief Barr learning of Marshall’s true identity as a mall cop in Illinois, and Marshall having the opportunity to save the life of Eve Ho, a beautiful Amer-Asian who agrees to drive Marshall to New Orleans.
