Bestselling author Samantha Mui rewrote her story to follow her passion for food

0

New book reveals the joys and struggles of 18 Asian women entrepreneurs
who travelled many different paths to create their best lives

Food blogger and cookbook author Samantha Mui growing up was uncomfortable with her own Asian American identity. She was often overlooked by teachers and was seen as a troubled child by her peers, thus she also experienced being bullied. To escape from her reality, she would often daydream of hosting cooking shows. It wasn’t until many years later when she landed her in culinary school, she realized she’d been a creative and hands-on learner – she learned way more in the kitchen than she had ever learned from a textbook. “I realized. I just didn’t find my place in a traditional school setting.”’ Once I went to culinary school, I felt empowered and that gave me the courage to go back to community college to get a BA and then later get a master’s degree.”

Samantha earned those college degrees as a way of “collecting skills,” she says. “I was a communications major, then I became an international studies major, I was in debate. I was all these different things because I thought, ‘One day, I’m going to tell stories and I’m going to do it through food. And I don’t know how I’m going to do it.’ Essentially, I’ve been working 10 years trying to learn all these different skill sets to either market myself, to talk about food, to be in the food space, and leverage that.” Now she posts her food blog at her Instagram @SammyEats and on her website. She has received glowing reviews for her beautiful and personal cookbook/memoir, Melting Pot: Stories from a Chinese American Daydreamer.

She shares much more about her path—how she grew up “too fast,” why she believes women need to validate themselves rather than waiting to be validated by a partner, and how she learned to “go hard on the things you really care about”—in the inspiring new book Asian Women Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with highly successful Asian women reveals how they have overcome obstacles and stereotypes, pushed past self-imposed limits, and defied expectations imposed on them by others, often their parents. This book is a master class of entrepreneurial advice and personal development guidance for any woman in search of role models who show that, yes, you can live the life of your dreams.

Follow her blog on her Instagram @SammyEats or find it at her website, SamTillyMui.wordpress.com. Melting Pot: Stories from a Chinese American Daydreamer is available online at Target, Barnes & Noble, or bookshop.org. In the San Francisco Bay Area, it is available at Omnivore Cookbooks, Eastwind Books in Berkeley, and Green Apple.

“What do you want to do?” is the wrong question, says bestselling author Sabrina Runbeck

0

New book reveals the joys and struggles of 18 Asian women entrepreneurs who traveled many different paths to create their best lives

When we’re younger, says cardiothoracic physician’s assistant Sabrina Runbeck, MPH, MHS, the most common question we get asked is, “What do you want to do?” From her perspective, “That’s such an unfair question. We haven’t experienced enough of the world yet. We haven’t really dived deeper to do our self-discovery.” We look around at parents, school, friends, neighbors, and start comparing ourselves to them and then molding ourselves to meet outsiders’ expectations. But even if we check off all the things, “it doesn’t really lead us anywhere,” she says. “The ultimate question we should be asking is, ‘What type of lifestyle do I want?’” That means, Sabrina explains, you should be thinking about a lot of other questions: Where you want to live? Are you OK working weekends? Do you want kids? Do you want to prioritize being home with them or advancing in a career? What type of work environment will you thrive in?

In the beginning, we may not know the answers to all of these questions, but the key is to be intentional about figuring them out. For Sabrina, having a life vision that didn’t align with her husband’s ultimately caused her divorce. “We’d been together for many years, things were going great, but the vision didn’t fit. Everybody who knows me knows I’m very driven. I’m on top of things. I love engaging with people. People come to me to solve their problems. There’s no way I would just one day get married, stop, have kids, and only focus on my family,” she says. “I feel like you can be both.” And by this, she doesn’t mean “balance,” a concept she believes is a fantasy. Rather, she seeks a “harmony cycle,” which involves recognizing the things that are truly important and letting go of those that aren’t.

As a physician’s assistant, Sabrina started out her career fulfilling both her own desires and the expectations of her parents. But gradually, as she saw what was emphasized in her workplace—pushing yourself to the limit, treating disease instead of focusing on prevention and self-care—she began to get disillusioned. Finally, she got so sick she could not show up for work and was told, “Don’t make a habit of this.” The lack of appreciation for the amount of work she had been doing left her feeling diminished and disrespected. It drove her to change her work situation and begin reaching out to help others in her industry.

Now she hosts the Powerful and Passionate Healthcare Professionals podcast, where she shares advice on prioritizing your to-do list, fighting procrastination, guarding against burnout, and much more. Healthcare workers in particular are susceptible to both PTSD and depression. But they also suffer regular mental “injuries”—these happen if someone has to engage in a moral dilemma about who to help first or has to deliver terrible news to a family. “It all takes a toll on our bodies,” Sabrina says, “however, there are also studies that show either you can have these mental injuries or you can have psychological growth. It depends on how you are supported.”

She helps healthcare professionals focus on that preventative side. “We can be better supported with specific ways to reboot our mental hygiene, redefine our motivation in life, know our goals and where we want to go, so we have a clear vision and mission,” she explains. “Then we are able to restore our energy readily—I teach people exercises that can get them there within two minutes. You can get into a state where, no matter what you do, you are feeling positive. You’re feeling satisfied.”

More about Sabrina’s struggles and successes are in the inspiring new book Asian Women Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with highly successful Asian women reveals how they have overcome obstacles and stereotypes, pushed past self-imposed limits, and defied expectations imposed on them by others, often their parents. This book is a master class of entrepreneurial advice and personal development guidance for any woman in search of role models who show that, yes, you can live the life of your dreams.

Being sued and beating cancer are part of bestselling author Mary Dee’s success story

0

New book reveals the joys and struggles of 18 Asian women entrepreneurs
who traveled many different paths to create their best lives

As the daughter of a female entrepreneur and first generation immigrant, it was natural that Mary Dee aspired to have her own business one day. And right out of the gate, she was a 6-figure earner in her first venture out of corporate in her early 20’s. Flash forward to 2018 after catapulting another business to 8 figures in just 12 short months and she found herself in the sticky web of the FTC. Digital advertising and compliance came into question and the next thing she knew, all her assets were frozen and she was being sued by the Federal Trade Commission. “It was a really expensive lesson and I felt completely blindsided,” Mary says, but it left her with knowledge and experience that she now brings to the growing number of corporate clients working with her new business, The MADLOVE Agency. “I help other business owners with their strategy, their planning, and their people. I have a three-step process that I go through with each and every client. A big piece of it is leadership and that’s the part that I am most excited about,” she says. “Leadership has a lot to do with relationships and relationships are my jam. Connection is where I prefer to spend my time and my focus; and that connection fosters trust which gives me the opportunity to work with ordinary businesses so they can be extraordinary.”

Mary’s other unexpected lesson came from having and beating breast cancer at the same time she was going through the lawsuit. She found a community of women also affected by breast cancer who supported her and, now that she is on the other side, she is grateful to be able to support women who are seeking answers and community as they navigate breast cancer. All of her current work is influenced by the two crises, the lawsuit and the cancer, and how she overcame them. “One of my best friends came to me and said, ‘I know you’re going through a lot right now, but I also know you, and we should really think about what the next chapter looks like for you.’ That was a really great positive message at a time in my life where I was a little frozen for a minute.” It gave her the inspiration to look beyond what was happening in the moment and reconnect with herself. “I love this quote, which I think most of us have heard: Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it. Life happened and I chose to respond to it with resilience and a renewed sense of purpose.”

Read more about how Mary Dee re-created her career—and how she deals with the Google search results about the lawsuit that will follow her forever—in the inspiring new book Asian Women Who Boss Up, co-authored by Tam Luc, author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with highly successful Asian women reveals how they have overcome obstacles and stereotypes, pushed past self-imposed limits, and defied expectations imposed on them by others, often their parents. This book is a master class of entrepreneurial advice and personal development guidance for any woman in search of role models who show that, yes, you can live the life of your dreams.

How financial planner and bestselling author Marguerita Cheng defied the naysayers

0

New book reveals the joys and struggles of 18 Asian women entrepreneurs
who traveled many different paths to create their best lives

As the enterprising child of  immigrants (my Dad was an immigrant, not my Mom- I may need help clearing this up) , Marguerita Cheng earned a degree in finance and spent 14 years as a financial advisor at a  large investment firm. But two things   always bothered  her:  the emphasis on assets under management and  lack of focus on financial planning.   Finally,  she decided to launch her own firm to focus on personal finance, helping individuals and families understand their finances, prepare for the unexpected, and have more confidence when it comes to money. Specifically, she wanted to give financial advice—not just investment advice—to younger clients and those from diverse, multicultural backgrounds.

“Some people said, ‘That’s great, Rita, but you’re not going to be successful if you work with people under 50, because nobody under 50 has any money, and people can get advice for free.’ There were a lot of naysayers,” remembers Marguerita, who goes by the nickname Rita. But Rita’s key insight was that there were enough clients to go around. “They can be right, and I can be right. For the people that they are serving, this may not resonate, but there are many people! The glass is half full.”

Because she had faith that her ideas would resonate with the right audience, she launched her business, Blue Ocean Global Wealth, in June 1999. Since then, she says, her financial guidance  focus on financial planning  has given her clients the confidence  they need to accomplish what is important to them.

In addition to skepticism about her business model, Rita also had to overcome the judgment of others—particularly women in her community—about starting a business with two small children, an infant and a three-year-old. She just smiled and responded, “What do you mean? Now I don’t need to stop and try to get pregnant. They’re already here. They’re not going anywhere.” She also readily admits to having to overcome preconceived notions in the marketplace. “I think this is true for every woman, but particularly for Asian women, the other thing that I had to overcome is stereotypes. I was told that I wasn’t going to be successful because I was a horrible salesperson. To my face! The person said, ‘You spend too much time listening and building relationships. You don’t know how to sell.’ But I realized that clients do business with people they like and trust. And if you want people to trust you, you need to take the time to listen.”

Read more about Marguerita Cheng’s journey and what motivates her every day in the inspiring new book Asian Women Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with highly successful Asian women reveals how they have overcome obstacles and stereotypes, pushed past self-imposed limits, and defied expectations imposed on them by others, often their parents. Bestselling author Lucy Liu wants Asian women to know: “Asking for help is brave.”

0

New book reveals the joys and struggles of 18 Asian women entrepreneurs
who travelled many different paths to create their best lives

Entrepreneur Lucy Liu had no idea that life coaching could be a career. Similarly, when she asked her Asian friends what they knew about life coaching, they told her it was something that didn’t apply to them. “It’s not something that, as Asians, we are brought up with—to have support,” Lucy explains. “We just don’t see it. Because of that, we don’t usually ask for help. But asking for help is so brave. That’s why I’m so passionate about showing people the beauty of having a mentor and of having guidance to bring out the best version of you.”

Lucy brings one of her most important personal lessons to bear on her coaching practice. When she graduated from UCLA with a degree in economics, she started work as a financial planner in one of the most prestigious offices in Southern California—serving A-listers and wealthy athletes. She knew she’d be set for life financially. But she also knew she wasn’t happy because the job was not aligned with her own values. “I was always in chasing mode. I was constantly looking at the road ahead of me, but I was actually never happy in the moment,” she says. When the job began making her physically ill as well, she knew she had to do something. It took 10 years of personal development work, but finally, she says, “I transformed my life and I made the major decision to leave all that behind.” Now she helps other women create their own life-changing transformations—in far less than 10 years. Most of her clients experience change even in 30 minutes with her!

More about how Lucy launched her coaching business; how she explained to her parents that, yes, laughing, crying, and celebrating with clients on coaching calls is working; and how she still has to overcome negative self-talk is in the inspiring new book Asian Women Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with highly successful Asian women reveals how they have overcome obstacles and stereotypes, pushed past self-imposed limits, and defied expectations imposed on them by others, often their parents. How bestselling author Liza Millan lost a million dollars and started over

0

New book reveals the joys and struggles of 18 Asian women entrepreneurs
who traveled many different paths to create their best lives

The good news for entrepreneur Liza Millan was that she’d found what she loved to do—plan events. She spent years gaining experience in Fortune 100 and 500 companies, the toughest event crowd out there. Then she took that love and that experience and launched her own event business, which quickly earned more than one million dollars in revenue. The bad news? She trusted a partner whom she ultimately split with and, without documents in order or agreements signed and sealed, he was able to wipe out all of her earnings and leave her at square one.

After suffering through a year-long depression, Millan began her journey of rebuilding. She engaged in personal development, brought a legal case against her former partner, reclaimed her power, and launched her new events business, Masterpiece. Not only is she back to planning events, she also provides virtual events as a service as a result of the “new normal” that society is experiencing.  These events are not limited to webinar-like setups, but is a totally holistic experience that makes participants feel that they are in an actual event.  Millan is also offering a 12-week course for other entrepreneurs looking to hold virtual summits to reach both new and existing audiences for their products or services.

Despite her enormous setback, Millan says the one thing she kept thinking was: “Always remember that you can do this. Don’t let anyone stop you from what it is you love to do.”

Read more about Millan’s journey in the inspiring new book Asian Women Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with highly successful Asian women reveals how they have overcome obstacles and stereotypes, pushed past self-imposed limits, and defied expectations imposed on them by others, often their parents. Bestselling author J. Han follows her mom’s path—with a pivot to meditation practitioner and financial educator

0

New book reveals the joys and struggles of 18 Asian women entrepreneurs
who travelled many different paths to create their best lives

When Jessica Han, known as J. Han to her clients and followers, was younger, she saw herself as fortunate to have an entrepreneurial path blazed by her mom, Kay. J. Han was set to take over Kay’s network of 13 “Closet” clothing stores in Southern California, and her future was secure. But as she became more involved in the business, she had doubts. “I started to realize there’s more to life for me,” she says. “I know I’m here to be of service in some way. Having the clothing stores was a way of being of service and yet I knew there was something more.”

Her next revelation came when she did her first meditation with crystal singing bowls. There is a singing bowl that resonates with each of a person’s seven chakras—the energy centers of our bodies. “I could feel each of the vibrations throughout my body where the chakras were,” J. Han remembers, “and I was inspired to purchase a set of my own bowls.” Now she offers sound integration to clients as a way to help them balance their chakras. “With sound healing, I create a safe space for people to be connected to their mind, body, and spirit. Being able to hold space for others inspires me.”

Her own journey of self-discovery involved painful moments, like finally reaching out to her birth father, whom she had never met and whom her mom never spoke about. His response made clear that while he wished her well, he did not want to meet her or be involved in her life. Even though she initially felt rejected, she was ultimately able to see his reaction as a result of him being stuck in a story from the past. She credits the intense work she has done tuning into her own mind, body, and spirit with allowing her to view his choice with love and compassion.

More about J. Han’s three business ventures—her sound healing and integration practice,  the clothing stores, which she still runs and teaches financial literacy. I’m committed that no one is left behind by bringing financial literacy to the forefront.—is in the inspiring new book Asian Women Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with highly successful Asian women reveals how they have overcome obstacles and stereotypes, pushed past self-imposed limits, and defied expectations imposed on them by others, often their parents. Bestselling Author learns to live in the moment—without giving up future goals

New book reveals the joys and struggles of 18 Asian women entrepreneurs
who traveled many different paths to create their best lives

With her career in engineering under way as planned, Elizabeth Yang decided to enroll in law school just to understand the legal system better. “We all might end up in court someday,” she thought, “and it’s better to be prepared.” But when she got her law degree, she also got a job offer—from a prestigious global firm looking not just for a new lawyer, but a lawyer with an engineering background. Elizabeth was the perfect fit for the job.

And the job, at first, was the perfect fit for Elizabeth. That is, until she became a mom. She knew 80-hour weeks would mean someone else would be raising her two children. “I won’t even get to know them,” she thought. She had to make a change, so she took a leap of faith and launched her own small law firm. Now she sets her own hours. She can drive her children to their afternoon activities, have dinner with them, and get back to work after they go to sleep. “I realized it’s not about future goals, it’s about the present. Now my ‘why’ is just to enjoy the journey day by day, moment by moment.” Meanwhile, her future goals are still being realized as her Southern California law firm’s client list continues to grow, and she is able to expand her team of lawyers and nurture their careers.

Read much more about Elizabeth in the inspiring new book Asian Women Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with highly successful Asian women reveals how they have overcome obstacles and stereotypes, pushed past self-imposed limits, and defied expectations imposed on them by others, often their parents. Bestselling author Didi Wong: “Let the world hear and see you!”

0

New book reveals the joys and struggles of 18 Asian women entrepreneurs
who traveled many different paths to create their best lives

Entrepreneur Didi Wong has received numerous accolades for her achievements. In part they have come because, as she says, “I definitely put myself out there.” She advises other women to do the same. “If you have value to give, why hide it? Let the world hear and see you so that your gifts can actually be of service to people.” Wong originally intended to be seen and heard on Broadway but came up against the hard reality that there were not many roles for Asian women at the time she was going out on auditions. Still, she loved New York, so when she moved with her successful actor husband to L.A., she was not happy.

That drove her to do inner work, including a four-day intensive yoga retreat in Hong Kong. There, she says, she woke up in the middle of the night and had a calling. “If you’ve never had one, just really go inward and pray and be spiritual and it will come to you,” she promises. “Because it’s about connecting to your source—your head and your heart connecting.” Her calling told her to give up acting and take up entrepreneurship. She launched the first of many companies, selling yoga wear. Of course, finding her calling did not mean automatically succeeding in that calling! From selling a single tank top she then succeeded and failed many times over before now channeling her experience into The Yes Academy, a collection of group coaching and one-on-one mentorship programs designed for both new and established entrepreneurs. Wong sums it up this way: “We help other people not waste time. I like to say we teach how to earn double the money in half the time. It’s very exciting.”

Wong has much more to share—including how she helped her parents accept that she was not going to fulfill their traditional expectations, even after her father told her, “You will never make it in America”—in the inspiring new book Asian Women Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with highly successful Asian women reveals how they have overcome obstacles and stereotypes, pushed past self-imposed limits, and defied expectations imposed on them by others, often their parents. This book is a master class of entrepreneurial advice and personal development guidance for any woman in search of role models who show that, yes, you can live the life of your dreams.

How bestselling author Denise Michelle learned to dream bigger

New book reveals the joys and struggles of 18 Asian women entrepreneurs
who traveled many different paths to create their best lives

Sometimes the first leap into entrepreneurship is the beginning of a journey to a destination you don’t even know exists. That’s how it happened for Denise Michelle, who thought she was living her dream when she opened a yoga studio in L.A. “I had no business plan. I just started and I did what made sense to me,” Denise remembers. And what made sense was to do everything herself. “I was the head teacher, bookkeeper, marketer, accountant, doing all the day-to-day operations, and it was exhausting,” she says. “I actually started to resent it because my hobby was yoga, my job was yoga, and I didn’t have anything else. I wanted more and I didn’t feel like I could have more. I couldn’t see beyond, ‘Well, I’m in my dream, shouldn’t I be loving it?’”

That questioning led her away from the studio and into surfing, and when she suffered a serious injury, she found her way to new types of healing. She’d been certified as a massage therapist, but then she got certified in reiki and began to study EFT. “I went deeper into the healing arts, like sound healing, and then I started going into spirit—3D, 4D, 5D,” she says, “and meditation became a big access point for all of this.” The path from yoga to bodywork to healing work then led to coaching. “I had started coaching people on the table, helping them break through and have transformations,” Denise explains. “Everything just started coming together into transformational life coaching.”

But she still wasn’t finished evolving her practice. She now sees herself as “a coach’s coach,” working with healers, influencers, and people who have missions to help others. The tool she uses is Rapid Transformational Therapy, or RTT, something she’d never heard of in her yoga days or even her early days as a coach. “Originally I was taught how to deal with paradigms and you just kind of peel away the onion, layer by layer,” she says. “But these people don’t have time to be doing that! We need to bulldoze through.” RTT fits the bill because it goes straight to the root cause of things. “We get down to how this particular memory or experience created your belief. And we change that. We shift it, whatever it is—whether it’s food, anxiety, depression, infertility, or trauma.”

Denise herself knows about trauma from her years of failing to understand her borderline personality disorder or address her suicidal intentions. She shares her full story, including how she finally recognized her mental illness and went through treatment, in the inspiring new book Asian Women Who Boss Up, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” This collection of interviews with highly successful Asian women reveals how they have overcome obstacles and stereotypes, pushed past self-imposed limits, and defied expectations imposed on them by others, often their parents. This book is a master class of entrepreneurial advice and personal development guidance for any woman in search of role models who show that, yes, you can live the life of your dreams.
